What’s the consensus for removing some fence boards on standard wood fences? Worthless for a storm this strong? Good idea to possibly keep the fence up? How far should the spacing be?

I can go outside and tear up my fence and be guaranteed to have to work on it after the storm or I could leave it alone and maybe get lucky and not have to work on it. Seems like an easy decision.

You’ve probably got better uses of your time. If this bitch is as bad as she seems to think a few boards won’t make a difference

I have a shadow box fence. I removed every 3rd picket prior to Laura last year in LC and my fence was still mostly standing afterwards. Did I get lucky, yeah maybe but I had minimal damage.

Just make sure to stop before you hit a house.

I ran out of plywood so used some pickets to board up a few windows. Fence fell anyways. Insurance gave a lot for the fence and I fixed it for $50

How does insurance on a fence work if it’s shared with your neighbor?

I put up a new fence right before storm last year and decided to pull some boards. it held pretty good with some near 100mph winds. Reason I put them up with screws.

Katrina revealed that whoever put up my original >100 ft of fencing only sank the posts 18 inches. Every post had at least 45 degrees lean after. No removal of boards would have helped.

Insurance paid thousands for it. I replaced it myself for less than half what they gave me.

Don't ask, don't tell

Also, they only give 10 year life spans on fence so they depreciated 10% of replacement cost for every year of it's age and that depreciation is not recoverable like other items are so basically lie about how old the fence was

I’m not sure to be honest. I built mine on all sides, my neighbors likely claimed it as theirs.

Youll need to speak with a fencing expert about this…

After Gustav the insurance gave us like $300 for the fence

The estimate to repair were about $1200, to replace $2800

The insurance agent said it was a shared fence so we got our ‘share’ and had to ask the neighbors to put in the rest for the repairs

its probably useless unless you remove more than you'd want to put back up. Just a hunch

How did you fix a fallen fence for 50 bucks?

Depends on your policy. Not all policies treat it this way. Depends on what you are willing to pay for in a hurricane policy.
