Texas is the place to be. Check out the area between Austin / San Antonio, like New Braunfels and San Marcos. It's a beautiful area, close to the hill country and you are 30-45 minutes from two big airports in Austin and San Antonio...I assume you'll be flying when you need to travel for work.

Seems like factoring in some central locations (to the visits) would be good.

Are you forbidden from living in DFW or even San Antonio?
I'd consider those metros over Houston and anywhere in LA/MS/AL purely for hurricane-related reasons. If you only need to travel occasionally, you can fly or drive to where you need to.

DFW especially is more expensive, so your budget plays a role there.

other than that are there any big negatives?

Too much traffic caused by all of the people conducting drive-by shootings, delivering illegal substances, or fleeing the carnage.

I don't know what your travel options your business gives you when go on site. If you mainly travel by rental car, Lafayette is a very central location to drive out to Texas or Mississippi while being close to the coast. Personally, I think Lafayette is a fine place to live, with good public schools.

If you have the option to fly to all of your sites, Houston and DFW will have more options with their large airports.

Pensacola isn't in TX, LA, or MS but still might suit your needs.

I grew up on the MS Gulf Coast and it was okay but has gotten very crowded lately and is a lot more expensive than it used to be.

I'd probably live somewhere in the rural area north of Hattiesburg and south of Jackson if I moved back, but I'm more of a rural/small town person.

Just really depends on the things you value.

For someone who posts so often about where they live, you really are f'ing ignorant about where you live.

Tell us about those property taxes again.

Dirt cheap compared to property taxes and income taxes in Louisiana.

Maybe if you’re very low income it works out better in louisiana. Otherwise texas taxes are unquestionably better than Louisiana. And you get something for them too.

The county you're in if you choose Houston is critically important.
The red is Fort Bend County. The bottom of it is pretty close to the Gulf. The top of it next I-10 is probably 40 miles further inland. But insurers treat the county the same, and price them accordingly (not as bad as LA from what I can tell from the LA pumpers.) However, you can walk west 200 yards out of Fort Bend county along I-10, be in a different county, and bada-bing, you're cool again.

Be careful with the hill country; people that I worked with that had to rely on well water had a set of challenges I heard about every week.

I think I would be in Texas if I was in your shoes. Lafayette, LA is a top choice for Louisiana IMO.
