Terrible advice.

It doesn't sound like the OP is in the Navy or a state trooper. Dark to medium brown shoes are fine

Recommended Shoe Pairing With a Navy Suit? Anything from a walnut/cognac to a dark brown depending on the setting. In a more conservative setting, I wouldn't wear anything lighter than a bourbon color and would tend to stick to darker browns. If I was going to be around a crowd of 30's, I'd have no issue wearing walnut. Also consider your shirt, since you never want to have more than one thing that "stands out." If you're going to wear a light blue or white shirt, you're good with a lighter shoe color. If you're wearing something bright or an unusual color, tone down the shoes and go darker.

Lawd.

Black lace up Allen Edmonds Park Avenue.

Can wear cordovan but black is classic and will never go out of style. I live by one fashion tip. Dress your age.

White shirt or light blue. I wear whit about 90% of the time.

For reference, tan is the lightest I'd ever consider going.... again, never in a conservative environment:

Walnut, slightly darker, same rule:

Darkest I'd go conservative, but still border:

What I'd probably wear conservative:

If by "old school," you aren't referring to timeless fashion, but instead just things that people haven't worn in 4 decades. Black with charcoal, grey, or black (if you wear black.) Brown with blues unless you're wearing a midnight tuxedo.

To add more info:

It's for an interview. Conservative setting. White shirt. I'm worried that the shoes I bought are too light. They're in that bourbon/walnut range. Thinking about switching them out with a darker brown or black. Like on here, it's like no two people agree on either color (or shade of color, for that matter) from the internet research I've done.

Ahhh, interview. I would go with something darker or black.

Brown lace up dress shoes with matching belt. Not tan, not chocolate.

New info: black for interview
