Before you listen to anyone about a Glock you need to answer 2 questions:
1) Do you have young children?
2) How comfortable ar you and your wife with firearms?
If you answered “yes” to the first question or “not very” then a Glock is not for you!

Glocks don’t have “active” safeties. Pull the bang switch and they bang.

A glock doesn't have an external safety. Not good if you have kids around.
Same goes if you aren't comfortable around guns.
One plus to the XDm
Thumb and trigger safety

Leaving a loaded gun around unsupervised children is extremely irresponsible, external safety or not. If you are buying a gun with an external safety in hopes that the safety is going to stop your kid from shooting themselves or someone else then you don’t need to own a gun. An external safety IS NOT a childproof devise.

An unloaded weapon is an expensive paper weight.

A loaded gun accessible to children is a death wish. I keep several loaded guns in my house, some with external safeties and some without. I take precautions to make sure my children don’t have access to them and would never rely on an external safety as a means to prevent an accident.

i don't like the recommendation of a 5 or 6 shot gun for a home defense weapon at all.
Well I'll tell you like I tell the Liberals that want to ban high-capacity magazines. Just buy two of them. Problem solved.

I am about to get one of these bad boys. Smith & Wesson
Check out Palmetto. On sale for $249. Showing out of stock, but usually they have more within a day or so. Although this is a clearance item, so who knows. There’s a place on the item page where you can enter your email for notice when it’s back in stock.

If the child is holding the gun without your knowledge or consent, then you have already failed.

Get a CZ P09 for home defense. Relatively inexpensive, best trigger for the money and clip holds 19 + 1 in barrel. This is a DA/SA hammer fired gun. If you want a Glock alternative (striker fire), look at the CZ P10.

Can't go wrong with the Glock 19. Had a Springfield XD in .40 cal...sold it to buy the Glock. Didn't like the .40 -
too much "pop."
My Glock 19 is a Gen4. Gen5 just released.
Buy a premium home defense round (I prefer Golden Sabre, but there are other quality loads out there) and you'll be fine.
Old school - can't go wrong with a 1911 variant if you prefer a heavier caliber. Springfield and ParaOrdance make some good .45 auto spin-offs that won't break the bank.
