My son bought me S &W 9mm Personal Defender. 200 bucks. Nice little gun. I am still partial to my S&W Model 686 6” .357 Magnum. I like a big , heavy gun to shoot, me.

I have the same gun and prefer it over some of the more expensive ones I own.

Sucker is accurate with shitty Remington ball ammo. Got about 700 rounds through it with no issues and no cleaning

i actually just bought my wife a Ruger LCP 380 this weekend. it's too small for my hand but fit hers well.

we like guns but i don't love spending money on them for the hell of it. cool that other people like it, just not our thing.

end goal is a shotgun she can use at home, 380 carry for her, 9mm carry for me, and a handgun accessible for both of us in our bed room.

ETA: if it's a first time thing and you want an in between that you're both comfortable with, a glock 9mm is probably a great choice.

I have a Sig P226, a VP-9 and a Shield. The XD Mod 2 just seems to fit my hand and feels the most comfortable to handle.

Serious question because this has been thrown around a lot in this thread.

Do you think she will get off a 2nd shot after she fires a shotgun inside the house? I would think my wife would be scared shitless to fire a 2nd shot because she will be deaf from the first one.

you can't allow yourself to think like that when selecting a weapon best for home defense.

What you rather take a 30-50 ft shot with across the living room, a revolver or a full size pistol? What if there are two intruders, you are automatically put in a pretty big disadvantageous spot there with 5 or 6 shot.

I got 20 rounds in my xdm at home ready to go whizzing.

I have only 6 shots in my Mossberg 590 and I would rather have that than 20 shots of pistol ammo.

You have to think tactically about any situation and that requires statistical thought. If you get down to it the chances of a semi jamming are higher than needing more than the 5-6 shots a wheel gun will give you.

In the end, I still maintain a shotgun is the best home defense weapon bar none for numerous reasons.

The reality is most people have never fired any weapon inside a closed structure without hearing protection and all this discussion of an OK Corral type shootout is a very unlikely situation unless you have a drug or cash stash that someone is after.

Unless you have cornered an intruder a single blast is very likely to turn them around and one from a shotgun is going to be even more effective in that regard.

ETA shotguns aren't as loud relatively as people think:

depends on the woman. my wife goes out to the ranch and dove hunts with me plenty. she's used to the noise. she's fired it a few times and can handle the kick. she's still a relative noob at firearms in general.

handgunwise, she's fired a few, but she's probably not much on aim or target. now that she has one, she'll hopefully put in the time and get better.

adrenaline is a huge factor, but if you or your spouse knows how to go through the motions for chambering, safely aiming, and firing due to practice, the hope is y'all keep your cool. that's why going to the range is important periodically.

when it comes to a shotgun, i don't want her to ever have to fire a second shot. i don't want her to have to fire a single shot to begin with.

It is simply my opinion, based on 40+ years of using firearms, 10 years of competitive shooting (including NCAA matches in Thin-a-doe) and well actual combat.

Choice of a firearm for home defense is a pretty personal thing but I will recommend a shotgun to most anyone, especially someone new to guns. If you feel my advice is shitty make the counter argument the OP is asking for input.

The reality is the VAST majority of home defense weapons will never be used so the comfort level is the most important issue. People choice of home defense weapons often change drastically over time.

I’ve got no problem with a shotgun

My issue was about a revolver vs a higher capacity semi auto. Being a home defense handgun and not having to worry about toting excess ammo around, there is no good reason to opt for a lower capacity gun
