Reading glasses adjustment…..

I’m mid 40’s and recently it’s becoming harder and harder to see things like my phone. I’ve started using some generic reading glasses and for its purpose they’ve worked fine. The problem comes in after I take them off, I feel my vision is magnitudes worse. Any suggestions? Can this be corrected with lasik or the like. Regular vision is perfect.

Like my mom used to say "getting old ain't for candy-asses"

Does it only last a minute? My eyes do that, just need time to adjust after taking the readers off.

I had an eye exam a year ago...
I was 20/20. The guy said continue to wear cheap readers. There's really nothing else you can do. They can write you a prescription for readers but there's really no point. Maybe your vision is slipping and you need bifocals.

It’s only brief, but if I look at my phone or anything else close without them it feels like it’s worse. I’ve begun to just leave them on.

I use them occasionally as well. Just give your eyes time to adjust after you take them off.
I only use the 1.25x ones (my optometrist told me what magnification to buy)...I thought they would just make the blurry stuff bigger, but it also makes it crystal clear.

I would think it's very bad for your eyes to leave them on when not absolutely necessary.
I started using them for dark restaurant menus etc a few years ago. I definitely had a similar experience of quickly needing them to read more and more small print.

This started for me in my mid 40's and it slowly gets worse. You are probably close to needing bifocals. Go get you a real eye exam from a real doctor not one of these quickie cheap glasses places ( which is actually not cheap )

Yep. Had an eye exam. Got the same exact advice.
Started with 1.25 readers and gradually over time needed more magnification.
OP: The good news is wearing glasses doesn't make your vision worse. Old age is doing that.

time to update your script is when your arms are not long enough to hold your book. happens every couple years

What strength readers are you using?

if you wear contacts you get a change to monovision which allows you to read up close very clear.
works very well for me

Get younger is about the only solution.
Your eyes stay blurry for a few beats because the adjustment muscles aren’t as strong as they used to be.
It sucks but I’m right there with you.

If this were true bifocals wouldn't be a thing.

It's true. The reading distance is actually one of the least difficult things to adjust to.
It's all the little things like annoying pain in your back that you don't remember how you got it. Feeling like you have to go to bed earlier and earlier, but also finding it impossible to "sleep in." Becoming aware that you definitely need more fiber.
It's really not all that bad. You adjust, but yeah, all the memories of your grandpa. You certainly gain appreciation for why he was the way he was.

Imagine having to pay just to see

If you only need them occasionally, look into thinoptics.com. I didn't want to carry around full size glasses and case just for an occasional menu or receipt, so I bought a couple from thinoptics. I have one in a flat case stuck to my phone and one keychain case.

Welcome to your 40s. I wear contacts for distance vision, but over the last couple years I've had to use the readers more often. I don't know why everyone makes menus, labels, etc so small and hard to read these days.
I have readers stashed all over my house, my car, my office so I can always have some nearby.
As someone else said, my eye doctor said she could write me a prescription for readers, but I'm better off just grabbing cheap ones like I already did.
