Homeless scumbags are about the only thing New Orleans has in come with San Francisco.
Agreed. Louisiana in general could replace the word Nola.

Gentrifying a few neighborhoods isn't going to change anything. FYI functional people are leaving again.
Most recent statistics show more people leaving than coming and Black population increasing (a very fecund people) , that isn't gentrification no matter how much you want to spin.
For white collar jobs, New Orleans is barely competitive with Birmingham, Baton Rouge, or Mobile. It's atrocious and pathetic that Louisiana's largest metro is such a dump, but major changes aren't going to happen unless the good jobs materialize.
Semi-affluent people require those pesky things called employers if you want them to stick around for more than a weekend. And I don't mean bars, restaurants, and hotels.

So, what's the answer, guys? Are all inner cities irredeemable? And if they are, is every other place doomed?
Are we doomed to an eternity of fleeing to the places where there are no people, only to leave again when the people show up? Should we build the walls around our gated communities higher and higher to keep the bad people out?
I'm a conservative, but that is a very pessimistic view of humanity and the future that I don't really want a part of.

Most educated, productive people that leave New Orleans are going a lot farther away than the suburbs.

It is not.

As long as Section 8 is on the books, swaths of prime urban real estate will be ruined.

It's a tourism and trade city.
Yeah. Just a trade city that happens to have the biggest port in the entire country

Importing more batshit liberals into a city dominated by ghetto and liberals is not the way to save a city.
New Orleans needs a shite load more productive people just to tread water.

No.
But, gentrification is real and is hard to stop. I think finding that balance is the tough part... how do you build up an inner city to make it attractive to productive/successful/progressive people, yet keep housing affordable for the folks who have been there. And not only housing but all the amenities need to be kept affordable too.
I am all for having a diverse city/area. But hell, I wouldn't want to come home every day after working hard at my job and contributing to society - and find my neighborhood gone to hell because of a few lower income areas that DGAF about their community and surroundings. How do you make people care??
Conundrum.

I definitely think NOLA is getting better in some aspects. It's really good to see whenever I go back.
But it's the rate at which these good things are happening that needs to change. I know it doesn't happen overnight, but it's progress is extremely slow.

What? Most cities have improved over the last decade. The difference is whether it has materially improved, in terms of jobs, government, and infrastructure or surface level improved, with new restaurants, bars, breweries, and hotels. New Orleans is an example of the latter. Places like Pittsburgh, Nashville, and Kansas City are examples of the former.

I really don't want to know about YOUR bathroom habits, but you can still get into the Ozanam Inn and with the good weather coming, it may not be as crowded.
Dude, don't do that kind of stuff anymore....it's kind of disgusting

Some parts of Paris where all the African and Middle Eastern migrants have set up tent cities routinely look like St. Charles Ave after the Sunday Mardi Gras parades

Silly me, I forget how small minded the OT is. Thanks for the reminder, chief.

I still haven't figured out who is purchasing the 2 bedroom shotgun houses for $700,000.
This isn't really a thing. Only 7 2 bedroom houses sold for $700k in the past year. Three were in the Quarter and one is a 2,300 sq ft house on Grand Rte St John.

There seems to be two types of people coming here and gentrifying the hood.
1) Wealthy out of state types who are looking to start small businesses, especially in non-techy industries.
2) Wealthy out of state types who are here as do-gooders, the Teach for America types.
I think most of the first group is going to stay. The second group seems more likely to rent these high-dollar places for a few years, then roll out to their next adventure.
