Railroad Unions Split Over Labor Contract

WSJ

A potential labor strike by railroad unions could disrupt some supply chains as soon as early December.

One of two of the country’s largest railroad unions said Monday their members voted to reject a new wage deal brokered by the White House, moving closer to a labor strike that could disrupt some supply chains as soon as early December.

Since the contract for conductors failed to be ratified, the contract for all railroad workers in SMART-TD’s coverage failed. SMART-TD said there was a turnout of more than 28,000 out of around 36,000 members covered in the current negotiations.

The BLET union said 54% of members who participated in the vote voted to accept the five-year contract. The BLET represents about 24,000 locomotive engineers and other rail workers covered by the agreement.

I’m normally not sympathetic to unions but the rules under which the railroad employees operate are fricked and need serious reform. Hence denying the contract.

It is possible for the railroad to under-employ the boards enough so that there is never time home or to take care of things like medical visits because you have to be constantly on call to go do whatever for them.

This doesn’t go into the other issues either like how far away the job fitting your position is, to where there may be low level guys who don’t have to travel far for work but higher ranking guys may have to go several hours away to report to work.

I think we as a nation, underutilize the rail system. There needs to be more rail travel for moving goods from city to city and less 18-wheelers cutting people off driving 68 mph in the left hand lane.

Big trucks can move the product from the rails to the stores within the city.

Strike last 3-5 days before government forces them back to work?

Just in time for midterms to be over. How convenient for the unions.

Something like 1/3rd of of long distance freight uses the rail lines baw.

You know that’s typically the case, right? It cost a lot less to ship a bunch of shite across the country using rail than 18 wheelers… companies aren’t gonna choose the more expensive transportation cost just to frick with you

America's freight rail network is awesome and among the best in the world. I do agree with wanting to see less long haul trucks on the highway - but that's largely going to stick around as well tend to build out DC's and hubs along interstate highways instead of along rail corridors.

Our passenger rail network blows, but that makes sense given how huge our country happens to be. It's legit bad though, and could be a lot better.

Either way, inland waterway and pipelines in the central gulf coast put truck and rail to shame. They are so much more efficient.

You've never worked in logistics or in a position directly affected by logistics. What you're suggesting is impossible.

Just because you are not familiar with it does not mean we underutilize it. Every item you purchase likely touches a rail car at some point in it's journey.

This is exactly how it works.

So are all workers from a specific rail company covered by the same union or could both unions have people at the same company?

There are many unions at each company. Each union represents different crafts.

Awesome. Waited 850 days to get my bronco built. It was finally built and ready to be shipped by rail.

IF the Union friendly White House brokered the deal and they still rejected it, they're asking too much.
