Seems we need them for current and future generation computing. Are they really crucial? What's the solution to make them more palatable? Water consumption is reportedly high...do they not recycle and recooll that water? Where do you put them to make them least impactful but practical?

Do we though?

Or does AI?

People don't truly understand how insanely high the 5GW load is that the Meta data center in North LA is

That's more power than both the River Bend and Waterford 3 nuclear plants combined.

Being we’ve lived without them for the entire human existence no.

But yes they’re crucial in the AI arms race.
Which will probably dictate who controls brute power and influence.

Unlike most technology over time we usually improve power efficiency.

Current AI approach is the opposite, it's unsustainable

The power draw is more of a concern than the water usage

And as far as do we need it? It's mostly used for slop but will eventually have more productive real world application

They should be in abandoned warehouses, malls, walmarts, and have solar panels on top. They should not take up farmland or be near residential areas.

I'm not sure what they do exactly (Store Data).

But the one by us has it's own electric substation, the complex is huge.

I have mixed feelings about Elon as a whole, but he is correct when he says that space is pretty much the only place to put data centers without causing big protests.

Elon’s SpaceX puts them in space and solves water and heat problem. Does it with reusable rockets. Rocket fuel made of Leprechaun urine. Data Center maintenance uses Stairway to Heaven or Jack in the bean stalk seeds.

AI porn for all and great for planet.

Forsyth, Ga. is getting one.

Georgia Power was going to close a nearby coal plant because of some Clinton/Obama global warning thing, but its still running. They also have a 3,600 acre lake. It's in a wooded area and the amount of tax paid/promised to Monroe county is huge. I guess we will see.

engineer with Entergy told me it would be the most energy dense location on earth once complete. probably not for long, however, with other data centers in planning
