Question for those who have had lasik eye surgery

Do you recommend going to your optometrist to have an exam and then get a referral
Or
Just go to a recommended lasik center for a consult.

Thanks I was wondering what those who have experienced it thought about cutting out the middle man by not having an exam first?

I would not be skipping steps on your eyes. Whatever, I think on the consult, they are just checking cornea thickness. I had a second step between the consult and surgery where they did a detailed eye mapping thing.

Nothing wrong with seeing your optometrist first if you wish, especially if you know him and trust his judgment (or hers). However only ophthalmologists perform the surgery.

I had it in 1999. Went to the consult at Lasik center. No complaints.

cut the middle man out... I just went straight to a lasik surgeon. You already know you have poor eyesight, what else can your optometrist tell you?
If your eyes haven't matured or there's anything that would not make you a good candidate for lasik, the surgeon can tell you that him/herself.

I went to my optometrist first, mainly bc my insurance pays for a free annual exam, but also so I could rest assured that my vision was not 20/20 and needed correcting.
My insurance paid nothing towards lasik so a referral would have been useless- I just self-referred once I'd seen my optometrist. But if your insurance will be paying all or a portion, call and ask them what you should do.
Another option if you know for sure that your vision needs correcting is to have it done, then see your optometrist about 6-8 wks later for the regular exam to confirm that you're now seeing 20/20.

This.
I did not go to my optometrist or my ophthalmologist when I decided to have the surgery. I had a consultation and had the tests performed at the Opthalmologist who would be performing the surgery, and then had it done. Best money ever spent.

I went straight to the Williamson eye clinic.

The dr. performing surgery on your eye will give them a better exam than th opthamologist at Walmart.

This. I actually went to my optometrist for an opinion, and she said I wouldn't be able to get LASIK. Glad I didn't listen to her. Got it 10 years ago and still have great eye sight.

Just go straight to the opthamologist. They are going to run a ton of test any way on your eyes to make sure your a good candidate. I got mine done about 4 months ago, best money I have ever spent

My advice, go to a reputable place, no matter the cost. Eyes are not something you frick with on the cheap.
Mann Berkley is the leader in this stuff, but will feel a little like a assembly line. The doc I saw in Houston is certified to the same level as MB, but more hands on and one on one with the patient care.
I've had 20/20 vision since the procedure. I'm getting older and my close vision is starting to fade, but the lowest powered reading glasses do the trick and I'm fine with that.

Dr. Charles did mine. No complaints.

What does this cost for people that have had it done? Also, did your eye insurance cover any?

No.

It was $2400 total at Williamson when I had it done 4 years ago. Insurance would only pay ~$500 if I went to the clinic on their list (which wasn't Williamson). I chose to go with them most reputable clinic instead.

I can attest that this isn't uncommon. Unless they're already working for an ophthalmologist, an optometrist is very unlikely to have the equipment necessary to make this informed decision. And worse, some of them don't understand who is and who isn't a good candidate.
