Things have to change for me. What have you all used to successfully achieve that mythical, non drinking status?
Limit your drinks per day. Decide to stop at 2~3 drinks. Try to take longer when you drink them. When you reach your limit, switch to green tea, sparkling water, or some other healthier beverage. Don't say 'frick it' after your drinks and just have more. More drinks won't help the buzz better and only makes you feel worse afterward. It's about taking control but not denying yourself. Sure, it'll take discipline, but stopping drinking takes more. Think of it like a diet. You can eat anything you want...just control the portion. You can do it if you really want to.

You're probably joking but I went from drinking 4 or 5 beers a night to drinking 4 or 5 lacroix waters a night.
I drink regular old club soda. It helps

If we all had control we wouldn’t have threads like this one baw.

Walk into an AA meeting and share about what you’re going through. The people on here won’t be able to relate like you and I can.
Make changes with people, places and things. AA meetings will get you on track to a life better than you could imagine. Been there, done that. At 40 yrs old, you have the chance to live a great sober life,

Go join an MMA gym. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will become your new drug.

I do understand where you are coming from. But, people adjust their diets to achieve an objective. No one stops eating. If he's having no luck in stopping drinking, then perhaps he can learn how to be the master of his situation. It could work for him.

I know you mean well but that’s terrible advice for an alcoholic. It’s the same thing as telling someone addicted to heroin to just do a little bit each day. Once you start the cycle it doesn’t end

If you have a drinking problem, you can cut down. If you are addicted, you cannot drink

Pretty sure they will have serious daddy issues when they grow up.

Alcohol is not your problem believe it or not, it’s you. I too am a A.A. member, and until you are at the lowest of lows you will not change. Go to a “men’s” A.A. meeting and share your story. Follow every instruction they tell you, as dumb or silly as it sounds. Your life will slowly change for the better. And when everything is good, don’t stop going! Remember how you felt when you originally typed this, that feeling of loss and desperation. Remember it everyday!

quote:Thanks for opening up and sharing in this thread. Let me start by letting you know that there's nothing to envy. Those of us who have gotten and stayed sober and live a much better life today with lots to be grateful for - you can absolutely do it too. If you devoted 1/3 of the energy you do in your drinking exploits to doing what it takes to live a different way, you'd be successful. I know it sounds like an informercial but I swear it isn't. This shite works, and is true!
I envy you
I'm pleasantly surprised to see a lot of folks mention AA. Let me be another voice screaming that. Get your arse to a meeting and get a sponsor. Get you a Big Book and jump right in. AA gets a bad rep out irl and on this board, but it absolutely worked for me. I was a daily drunk, pothead, cokehead, x, pills, mushrooms, acid user from year 1990 at age 16 to year 2006 age 32 (going on intellectual age 17). There were brief moments of getting my life straight in that time period, but for the most part I dicked around for way too long and pissed my life away.
I've now been sober for 13 years. I didn't think there would be a chance in hell that I would ever break free from that. Like I said, I did it daily. And by "it", I mean all of the above. Alcohol was the main course, but sometimes as with our eating habits I'd skip the main course and load up on the appetizer (weed). Sometimes I'd skip it all and head straight to dessert (coke). But I got fricked up EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I used to make fun of people like me. I'd be coming in passing them up on the road from another wild night with the sun coming up while they were all on their way to school and work, and say to myself, "look at those fools!" Little did I know...
As far as what to do, the ball is in your court right now. There's a bunch of different directions you could go. But best of wishes to you my man! If there's anything I could do to personally help you, I absolutely would in a heartbeat. Other than getting sober. That part is kind of between you and God.
I want to give 1,000 upvotes to the guy who said the problem is not alcohol. It isn't. The problem is facing you in the mirror every morning when you wake up. I hope you get sober and realize that one day. And do what it takes to change. You change, and life changes.
