It got P1 bad at some points man. Having a 5 year old that realizes that something isn't right with dad is a pretty sobering event.

Having a little one basically made me go cold turkey. Except nights like tonight when grandma Sun God is watching Sun God Jr

I'm getting toasted on Elijah Craig and white cans

Why don't you just smoke weed instead? Everytime you feel like taking a drink, take a toke instead. Cannabis is a medicine and won't frick up your liver like the devil's water will. Plus cannabis won't dull your senses and in fact will enhance them. I bet you will be a better father/husband as well. Makes your wife's shitty stories rather more interesting.

I stopped for 2 years because a person I loved said "You are an adult, so you can drink...Or you can watch me walk away." That made it easy. That being said, I drink now, and try really hard to make sure I stay functioning and "normal". I understand what you are facing. Being an alcoholic is not a badge of honor. And booze is everywhere, at every function, party, dinner, commercial, etc. It feels like you can't escape it. If it is affecting your relationships, health, etc. you know what you need to do. Ask your SO to help you...

40 with kids here too bro. Similar story for me. Drinking culture but not time to drink and people who need/look up to me.

For me i actually developed a competing hobby. The gym, wood working and home improvement didn’t help me stop drinking every evening. Hell I even recognized it was an evening hobby/ritual to drink. I actually tried out CrossFit and the competitive nature of it got me hooked on that. Not saying you need to CrossFit but a hobby with a competitive edge and a community behind it might help you. I’m not a sober person, but I can’t improve with CrossFit if I drink. So it’s waaay waaay down to like a few beers per week. Been that way for about two years now. Family life never been better and I’m really physically fit now.

Stop getting waxed alone and just drink socially. I don’t see the issue.

The PaRC in Houston and regular AA meetings after that. Follow the 12 steps.

My life has done a 180.

You're probably joking but I went from drinking 4 or 5 beers a night to drinking 4 or 5 lacroix waters a night. The lacroix has legit helped a lot.

Things have to change for me. What have you all used to successfully achieve that mythical, non drinking status?

Different things work for different people. For me it was about replacing it with more positive goals. I replaced my happy hour habit with going to the gym. I set out an initial goal of making it 100 days without drinking. I succeeded with that goal and kept going.

Following a relatively low carb diet can help with anxiety and help cut down on your drinking triggers IMO.

BTW these are only things that helped me personally. I'd recommend giving them a fair shot but I can't promise it will work for you.

Sounds like drinking doesn’t affect them the same way it does you. Not just physical effects, but of the mind and emotions. The jealousy of others being able to drink is natural and actually a healing part of putting down the drink for good.

The only thing that has worked for me (and I’ve tried many) is a book called The Mind Illuminated. It doesn’t address drinking in particular but it changed the entire way I think about life and that has let me put the booze aside. I’m not saying it will work for everyone but it’s definitely worth a shot.

You have no clue what you are talking about. OP if you are having to drink everyday you need to go into treatment then start the AA route

This is really the only answer. A lot of AA groups run 24 hours for a time around the holidays.

I found the other books mentioned in the thread, but I are you talking about The Mind Illuminated by John Yates?
