16 years sober—get in a good AA group and work it. If I can quit then there’s hope for everyone but you have to put forth the effort.

For me, I had to change everything. That includes the people I was hanging around. I’ve gotten to a point now in my recovery that I can be around drinking (coming up on 3 years sober) but for a while you can’t. Have you ever been to rehab? That’s what helped me the most in the beginning and A lot of people I know. I work in the industry and have seen people recover.

You'll just have to accept that for different reasons, some people can drink and others can't.

I used to be in your situation. I was a functional alcoholic. I never missed a day of work or got a DUI but also got pretty hammered every night. Living or being married with someone that's right there drinking with you makes it more difficult. You need to talk to your wife about you wanting to change your lifestyle and ask for her to help you with it. It will be more difficult without her buy in.

Step 1) be a grown arse man and grow up a little
Step 2) quit whining about your “problems”
Step 3) go to aa meetings
Step 4) live a sober life
Truth is, everyone has problems in their life. You just CHOOSE to escape them by drinking and acting like a child to “forget it”. Grow up, grab your nuts, and start acting like a man. You can’t stop because you don’t want to and you have an immature side of you because life is “hard”

Right. No matter how many times you try to drink normally, you’ll never do it with any consistency. If I take one single drink, I will destroy everything in my life I’ve tried to hard to build in just a matter of days. I’ll probably be in jail by the next evening. That’s how I drink.

We are wired differently bottom line. When I drink or drug, I can’t do it like a normal person. There are usually consequences. Sometimes not right away, but for me they always show up in some form. My life becomes unmanageable.

Probably a weird question, but is there any outpatient, post-work-hours rehab? Because I feel like a counseling, take control program could be helpful but I have 3 little kids. And I’m "in control" but things could go awry pretty fast.

Yep. Quite a few of them.

Townsend in BR is an outpatient rehab place. It's specifically designed for people that have regular jobs and just need some help.
ETA - they very well might accept your health insurance discreetly also

Seriously hope the OP can face his fears and ask for help. There is no shame in that at all. Screw what other people are doing or saying... You control you. Alcohol is very addictive both mentally and physically. I personally don't belive in saying you are powerless over alcohol, but I know many who have worked aa and gotten clean and that program works for them. There are also other options....meeting with a counselor one on one, smart recovery, celebrate recovery, etc...
Other great resources I recommend... Two books: alcohol explained by William porter and this naked mind by Annie grace. They will change how you think about alcohol. Annie grace also has a bunch of great podcasts you can access in YouTube for free.
Also, check out the r/stop drinking sub on reddit.
Good luck.

So I’ll just speak from my experience,
Outpatient does work for some people, but it didn’t work for me. I like you would sttring couple months here few weeks there but would always fall off the wagon. Sometimes it takes us making that step to impatient where we can’t fall off. With outpatient I still kept using. Also substances were controlling me. I felt I still had some simblance of control but I didn’t. Again just sharing my experience. Not putting you down at all. I commend you for wanting to get help, if you’re serious about it email me Matt at journeyhousela .org
I have resources across the state and United States if you aren’t in LA and we can figure it out.

Therapist and all the other stuff won’t help you have to have it in yourself only to realize you want to kick this.

Smoke weed instead
I quit drinking for years. I'm fairly comfortable having a few beers now but not more than 3-4 on the weekends. I'd smoke weed if I could instead but it's unfortunately still pretty taboo in a lot of industries
