Question About Police Training For Small Police Departments

Do the police deputies who work for small departments (that have a small budget) have to receive the same training as police who work for larger departments?
Smaller departments are not going to attract the best because they are not able to pay as much.. So they pretty much have to take what they can get, but in order to be a policeman is there at least a minimum amount of training required?
What about being an investigator? Do you have to pass something or go through a certain class before you become an investigator?

While larger police departments receive proper training, small police departments are forced to watch Andy Griffith reruns during orientation.

All police officers in LA are supposed to be POST certified ... some POST academies are much harder than others

The deputies can typically only have 1 bullet until they finish the POST academy, in honor of the show.

State Police host an academy to POST certify officers
ETA: there are several different academies around the state. BR area smaller departments that don’t have their own send their guys to LSP

Yeah but there’s a two year grace period I believe after they’re hired and reserves/part time don’t have to have it.
Also to answer OP a lot of smaller departments will send their new hires to a larger dept for their academy. Like St Tammany and St John and Harahan PD sending their new hires to St Charles SO with their new hires and running a large class.
Then there’s also other entities like CARTA that run academies as well.

No, and you have guys who couldnt get into larger PD's, or might of been fired for silly shite, working for smaller PD's.
Here in St.Louis, SLPD and STLCOPD academies have World Accreditation??. You could go from their departments to any PD in world and not have to go thru an academy again.
Muni PD's end up sending their peeps to those for profit police academies, which are not accredited by anyone, and do not transfer. Say, if you were a Florissant PO, and wanted to go to stlpd or stlcopd, you would have to go thru their academy, having to go thru the academy even though you went thru the for profit one

Pretty sure all police departments have to meet certain criteria set up by state or federal laws depending on the particular mandates and lots of that depends on the population numbers that Dept serves. That is how they get funded.

Depends on the department.
I have a friend who was a captain on a small mountain town police department. He had been through the FBI National Academy at Quantico.

Not a basic police certification academy. FBINA is training for upper management of local, state and international police departments.

They have to be POST certified in Louisiana. Larger departments will pay for all or most of the training. For small departments, they trainee may have to pay out of pocket.
