It was explained to me back then that New Orleans didnt have any good venues for music; obviously the Dome has terrible acoustics, but there were other places like the Municipal Auditorium , the Saenger and, going way back, the Warehouse
I remember the Warehouse! It was so fricking hot - but awesome environment. First time in my life I ever PAID for a bottle of water. I bought 2 of those bitches - like a baller.

there used to be a good one in the Union. saw Billy Joel when he was still hungry there from about 5 rows back, awesome show
Wait, Billy Joel played the LSU Student Union?? This had to have been the very early 70s i’m guessing around the time of the Cold Spring Harbor/Piano Man albums.. What I wouldnt have given to be there for that.

Varsity has been great the last few years. Better than the HOB actually. L'Auberge sucks because they have the guy that used to book the Varsity. He's afraid to take chances and apparently doesn't know what's popular outside of mainstream radio. PMAC will never do regular concerts other than Groovin on the Grounds.

it was "The Stranger" tour, he had been on a self-imposed hiatus of putting out material waiting for a frick-job contract with his original manager to expire(don't think he ever got a nickel for Piano Man,) and he came out of the corner swinging with that one

I was there.
I didn't think it was a great concert. A lot of the crowd left before the end of the show. Just telling you how it was.
This is absolutely untrue. One of my most vivid memories of the show was how long and intense the standing ovation was at the end. NOBODY left. Arena was full and stayed full right to the end.
Hope you remember which show you're thinking of cuz it wasn't this one.

Every time people got out of their chairs to dance, arena security made them sit back down in their seats.
I remember that. They were snatching little girls up and walking them out the back door, telling them to GTFO. Tours began going to the UNO Lakefront arena within months instead of having the patrons abused.

Freddie announced they were taking a break and he was going backstage “for a blow job.”
He said the same thing at the 1978 concert in New Orleans. It stuck with me because I was 12 at the time.

Never thought to think he might be the giver, lol
Years later I pondered that thought as well.

Yep. Lakefront Arena and the Cajun Dome in Lafayette. Now bands just seem to go to NOLA to the Superdome or Smoothie King Center. It's depressing looking a old copies of LSU's "Gumbo" and seeing all of the awesome acts that used to come to town.

but mid size venues 200-1200 are fairly depressing in BR
The Manship Theater is an awesome venue, seats around 300 or so, not a bad seat in the house and the acoustics are amazing. We go to a couple of shows a year there. If they would just get some better acts to play there.

and whatever old school hole in the wall spots i'm not aware of or thinking of The Chimes Mother's Mantle The Kingfish and subsequent establishments at that location Southdown's Lounge's parking lot parties (The Charlie Pappy Band and Potliquor were regular performers) Papa Joe's The Sports Page Secrets Lounge Chief's on Highland Road...
Man I used to hit all those places, add the J Club as well. The Texas Club has had many great shows over the years and it's really not that bad of a place to see a band play.

has the show at Municipal Auditorium in NOLA on Halloween 79' been mentioned?
Posted on 8/7/19 at 5:01 pm to Tigeralum2008
Inglewood, California and it rocked.
I had the 8 track and album.
They had some girls there and they showed their nice ones.
It was a great time to be alive.

I have never been here, but grew up directly across the street from Mike and Mark, the owners.

I’m really surprised he would have played a venue as small as the Union for the Stranger tour, that would have been 77/78.. now I’m even more jealous.
I did read recently how his original manager received royalties from all of Billy’s albums for like 10 years after Billy fired him, til like the mid 80s.. crazy ish, but lucky for people like you that got see him promote a Top Five album in the history of rock n roll (IMHO) in such an intimate venue.
