re: Putting down a dog was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

I’ve never said he’s wrong. I offered to help him gain perspective through his tragic loss and help him feel better.

You know why it doesn't work? Because, to you, he wasn't just a dog. You cared deeply about your boy, and he repaid your love and kindness with loyalty and appreciation that humans have a hard time understanding.
Dogs don't care if you've had a bad day. They just care that you're with them. They sense if you're sad and do their best to comfort you. They are excited any time you include them in your plans, even if it's just mowing the yard.
Dogs make us feel like we're the greatest thing on the face of the Earth, and we don't want to lose that. The great thing is that after we lose one, there is another one out there waiting for you. When you're ready, you'll know, and you will have another decade or so to cherish those awesome feelings that dogs bring out in you.
Thank you

It was brutal. I did not want another dog after

I’ve went through it about 6 months ago. I’m still affected by it. Strangely, it can be harder than losing a human you’re close to; even though it’s just a dog, it’s a dog that’s been in your life and by your side and part of your daily routine for 10 years. Time does make it a little easier, though.

We definitely had our routine. It was like clockwork for him.

I had two dogs when I started dating my wife. She also had a dog, and took in a stray the week I was planning to propose, so we had 4 dogs when we married. I wasn’t real happy about having 4 dogs, and always kind of resented that last little runt stray.
Ten years later, we are down to one. Of course, the lone survivor is that last stray. She sleeps by the door when I’m gone, follows me into the bedroom when I go to sleep, and her faithful companionship has only increased now she’s the only dog. She’s showing her age, and I’m not looking forward to the end. I thought it would be easier after losing the first 3 within about 3 years.
It always sucks, but the sadness and pain for a few days after the loss is worth the years of joy a dog provides.

I just walked into my son's room and he has my dog's toy next to his pillow. That tore me up.

Some people just don't understand the love of a pet. Like that idiot who shot his dog recently because it didn't retrieve a duck.

Yes it is very very painful to have to put an pet down. But, the happiness and joy a pet experiences from you while healthy and happy is worth so much more. I’ve never hesitated to get another pet.

My dad's favorite dog of all time was a boxer that he had:

Sorry for your loss man. I had to put down my 2nd lab in a row recently, and I had her for 12 years. She had pneumonia that wouldn't go away due to enlarged esophagus. Before her, had a male lab who had epilepsy and had to put him down at five years of age. I know your pain, believe me. Cried like a fricking baby both times.
We(I) fricked up and immediately went out and got a Goldendoodle. Terrible idea. Had to give him to a family two months in as he was eating my house up, which was sad in itself. I did not do my research and just wanted to hurry up and get a puppy to replace the pain. I am now on a dog hiatus until the time feels right again (and after doing a little more research on the breed we're getting).

I don't look forward to this day. Just remember the joy the pup brought into each of your lives. Dogs are something man, they really are family members.

We put our 18.5 year old poodle down yesterday as well. It's horribly sad, even though it was time. Prayers to you.

Same to you. And thank you.

some of you are retarded over dogs. That doesn't even make top 10 worst things a human can suffer with. We just had an OTer lose a 2 year old. If your old dog dying is the low point of your life, then you got it good.
