Putting down a dog was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

Our 10 year old Boxer had cancer and we had to say goodbye yesterday. I'm still grieving. I know I don't want to go through this again. I'm not sure how people can do this over and over.

Because you’ll be wanting another pup in 2 months.

We have 2 boxers, luckily no heath problems yet. My parents had to put their boxer down last month. Really is sad we don't have more time with them!

Time heals. We've had a number of pets to pass over the years and what helps is to have another one. One more that you can help live a happy life

I'm sorry about your pup. I've done it 4 times. It hurts real bad for a while, but it then gets better. You will remember the good times and their happy life and how much love you gave them. If you like having a dog, you will get another one. Their lives are short and that's just the way it is. I have 3 and they are all over 10 years old. I dread those coming days.

Been through it twice. It's hard and I cried like a baby. They were both very peaceful and my wife and I were laying on the floor holding them as they left us. It's the least we could do for all the years of joy they gave us.

Go to the pound and adopt a dog. The place is bursting at the seams with dogs that need a home. You’ll feel 1,000x better too.

Another dog will help with the grieving process. We had a Belgian Malinois that laid down and died. The Border Collie pup that we also had really helped with the process, though I still think about what a great dog the Malinois was. The Border Collie had a tumor and we had to put her to sleep last week. I've already started looking for another BC. You're not being disloyal to your dog by seeking another.

I love dogs and wouldn't want to be without a dog - but part of that process is that you have to make sure that they do not suffer at the end. You hate it and you cry, but you still have to do it.

I went through it last month, still one of the hardest things I have ever had to do and never want to do it again

it still hurts but has gotten easier with time. Just trust you did the right thing for them and take comfort in that you gave them a great gift

They truly are the best. Ours slept in our bed and loved everybody that walked through the door. I just don't think I can replace him.

Someone here posted this when I posted about losing our Border Collie. It is very true, though it is kind of a "someone is cutting onions" presentation.

That's how I feel right now. I tried telling myself he's just a dog, but it doesn't work.

Man frick. I look really dumb in the airport tearing up right now.

ETA: to OP, sorry for your loss. I haven’t lost a dog yet. My golden is 3, I already dread the day because I know how painful it is going to be. We don’t deserve dogs

You're not replacing him, you are starting a new bond with a new dog. I'm a lover of all dogs but after having boxers for most of my life, I know I will always have one in the family. They have such human like personalities and are great family pets. Take your time to grieve, but it's sadly a part of pet ownership.

Nah. He’s a member of your family. But we can’t beat biology. Dogs just live shorter lives. You gave him a great life, that’s all you can do. 10 years of good memories, cherish them.
