Pumps in NOLA flood protection system corroded in 5 years, supposed to last 35 years

It was unsettling news for those who remember Hurricane Katrina: Pumps that form key parts of New Orleans’ new flood protection system have already corroded to varying degrees – and the damage could turn out to be more widespread when inspections are complete.
The revelation made public last week has set off an effort to finish temporary repairs ahead of the June 1 start of hurricane season and an intensive look at what may have caused the problem.
Whatever the ultimate cause, this much is clear: The pumps at the three main outfall canals meant to help keep the city dry during hurricanes were intended to last 35 years. Yet just five years after construction was complete, heavy corrosion has turned up in one of the 17 pumps and lesser damage in others.

I bet regular maintenance on the pumps prevents problems like this, and the people whose job it is to perform that maintenance have been collecting paychecks.
But then I’m remembering when an investigation found storm drains across the city completely packed with soil, trash, and roots, when they’re supposed to be cleared on a regular basis.

What in the hell were the inspectors and maintenance guys doing to let the pumps get heavily corroded? That doesn’t just happen overnight. They don’t look at them at all over a 5 year period? The pumps need to be inspected and maintenance performed at least once a year.

The amount a faith we have in the ORCS, and levee system in general, should be majorly questioned because of shite like this.
Seems about right
quote:
The Corps “does not have the necessary in-house equipment and resources to dewater, inspect and repair the pump,” said Boyett, so it had to hire another company, Lakey Inc., to perform those tasks.
Seems about right

There is nothing in that city that functions well.

You can throw all the money in the world at Nola, and it will always fall drastically short of its potential.

Lol
In 2019 they found entire cars in underground drainage canals.
From Katrina.
Not one person had checked even the main drainage passes for 14 years.

Not sure on that one, but it seems the firms that originally built the structures were based out of state.

Most of the engineers and contractors in south LA are absolute scum that only care about contract value.
This is exactly why more government spending accomplish the opposite of stated progressive goals. Big contracts make people rich with very little oversight on how the people actually doing the work are treated or the quality of the work.

Hold on, let me check if I'm surprised.
Nope.
Nope.

It’s just like when salt water pools became the popular thing and the pumps would last like 2 years.

Wrong.

Lack of maintenance. Rotating equipment has to be properly maintained or it falls apart. Pumps aren’t made to sit stagnant, they are made to run. They should be on a weekly or monthly run schedule and all seals, bearings, gaskets should be checked. Hopefully the SWB was not in charge of maintenance.

The engineers and contractors who built the pumping stations aren’t responsible for operating and maintaining the stations.
The owner/user is. They can do it themselves or outsource this, but it’s critical that they follow the recommendations provided.
