Have to give a presentation later today, I am generally comfortable in front of people but the nerves set in already.

Anyone OTers comfortable speaking in public?

Generally not that hard. Focus on the task. Also helps to think of your audience as a bunch of idiots. Talk down to them. Forget rapport.

I'd bet most of his audience is a bunch of idiots. Don't sweat it Hogwarts, you'll be fine.

I was terrified of public speaking until 2012 when I graduated with my Master’s degree and had to present my capstone project.

Hasn’t bothered me a bit since then. I enjoy it actually.

I am fine with less than 7-8 minutes. If I gotta be up there for a while I am so damn nervous.

Not me. What you should do, though is direct your eyes toward the audience, look above their heads and not at their faces. Pretend you are doing a rehearsal, and remember that most of them aren't paying attention to you..they are off somewhere lost in more important or less important matters than whatever drivel you have to spray. It's not that important. You aren't that important. frick'em, do your time up there and get out.

Protip: if looking people in the eye makes you uncomfortable, look at the wall in the back of the room. Gives the impression that you're engaging your audience but you avoid the eye contact.

Do an intense physical exercise this morning

If your body is physically exhausted, it helps minimize the jitteriness that comes with the nerves

You’re telling a story to a group of friends.

To be clear, I’m not saying to talk as though you’re telling a story to a group of friends. That’s requires you to think about “how” you’re talking.

Im saying you are actually just telling a story to a group of friends. Maybe they aren’t your close friends, maybe you are in an office, but they’re friends and you’re just telling a story.

Most people in the crowd don’t want to be there. Talk with confidence and conviction and typically people will just accept it whether you’re right or wrong.

There’s always 1-2 assholes that feel the need to ask a stupid question or try to flex. Just say that you’ll come find them and take it offline or that a conversation for a whole nother day chuckling.

Tell a joke to start and it’s all down hill from there.

I have to speak in front of people all the time. Don’t get too many nerves now but when it’s time, game on. Flip switches.

Oddly enough public speaking doesn’t bother me. I’ve even been told I have a talent for it. My wife is the exact opposite. She’s terrified of public speaking.

I conduct virtual training sessions from time to time and generally feel more comfortable in face to face settings. The size can get up to 25/30 people and it always makes me feel more comfortable when it's done in person.

The last time I spoke in front of a large crowd (100+) was giving a Eulogy at my grandfathers funeral and if it's my info and words I would be speaking on I would definitely feel more comfortable than if I was presenting someone elses material.

Find someone in the audience friendly looking and channel that energy.

Just pretend you’re talking/explaining something to one person you know well and try not to think about the crowd

Regularly. Once you get started you will be fine. Don't focus on one person

I won’t do it. Absolutely hate it.
