I fight men twice my age on change orders on construction projects, with half of them ready to flip a table on me for saying I won’t agree to it taking an entire day for 4 guys to hang 2 sheets of drywall. 2 years in to this job now, my fricks given have dwindled to none. That includes public speaking and my reaction to my management.

I subscribe to the theory that ppl innately want to relate and connect with others. With that in mind, I incorporated humor, real life relevant examples, and encouraged feedback and responses from the audience. My project was on decreasing the annual ER lost capital by incorporating various methods tested during my Clinicals.
So my topic had the potential to making watching paint dry seem like a damn good time, but in the end - it was great. Had ppl laughing and engaged.

I had major issues speaking in public and making eye contact growing up. Decided to try and get over that by taking a couple public speaking courses in college. My fears came from not being confident in my words.
Be knowledgeable of what you're talking about. Knowing what you're talking about brings confidence.
Other people are probably just as nervous. No one is out there to make fun of you for messing up. Only shitheads would and frick what they think.
Get it over with early so you don't have to wait and let the thought of going fester.

Oddly enough public speaking doesn’t bother me. I’ve even been told I have a talent for it. My wife is the exact opposite. She’s terrified of public speaking.
this. but i did theater, CX debate, persuasive speaking, and FCCLA/FFA presentations in High School.
she wouldn't do it if her life depended on it.

Give me a little time to prepare and I can bullshite my way through it.
Seriously, it's all about being comfortable with your subject.

Don't have caffeine, it just makes you more nervous and jittery

I never minded talking in front of large groups in conference-type settings because 95% aren't even paying attention to what you're saying. Still, when I first started to have to present in front of our board or executive staff, knowing that they were engaged and going to ask tough questions, the nerves would kick in.
Don't over-prepare. Know your subject matter on a conversational level. Relax your body. Treat your audience like you're talking to a group of your friends. A mentor who worked for a large bank and always had to present in front of executives told me he would wear loafers and kick off his shoes under the table. He said it would immediately relax him as if he were talking to old friends in his living room. I'm not telling you to take off your shoes, but find something that relaxes you.

Just don’t start crying when you introduce yourself.

Have to give a presentation later today, I am generally comfortable in front of people but the nerves set in already.
Just start the speech with "Blood alone moves the wheels of history"

Talk slow and loud. Look at your data or sheets to catch a small break between bullet points. Make eye contact with a few people, and the ones who look away immediately stare at the wall behind them.

Talk slow
This is by far my biggest problem.
That and saying "Everybody with me?" every 39 seconds

Know your subject...make eye contact with various people in the audience. Smile and enjoy the situation.

I feel good about a few weeks/ days out. The day before and day of, I’m in my head. Once I get up and start speaking it all goes away.

Anyone OTers comfortable speaking in public?
Not only comfortable I enjoy speaking in public. I like telling a story and thats all it really is at the end of the day, may be a boring as hell story with almost no plot of interest but it is still a story. Being prepared is helpful but if you are not prepared rely on the fact that most folks ain't listening, most of them will not care what you are saying and will have no idea what you are talking about and for the few who do care and do know what you are talking about they are probably grateful its you up front and not them. In the rare case that someone points out that you have no clue what you are talking about simply say you will continue the conversation later in private. If that don't work and you are their equal or superior blow them off with BS. If you aren't their equal or superior you are fricked and should admit you could be wrong and will get the right information post haste....
Most people hate doing it and are sympathetic.
