Today I saw the third previously healthy patient under age 35 die from influenza complications in the last two weeks. I see 1-5 such people every year.

It decreases your chances of getting the flu at all by around 60%, substantially blunts the symptoms and decreases mortality if you do get it and provides even greater benefit to society as a whole by dramatically decreasing the exposures the most at risk populations among us will encounter. It CANNOT give you the flu, and your chances of a severe negative reaction are around 1 in a million (roughly the same odds of your roof collapsing in and killing you on any given day).

I appreciate the advice, doc, but I've never gotten a shot and only had the flu once. Keep your autistic sorcery away from me.

Wait, are you a doctor or did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently?

The only time I’ve ever gotten sick was after I had taken the flu shot
