These motherfrickers better not cancel because it’s “cold”.

Teachers and nurses are insufferable

Teachers deserve it. I wouldn't want to do what they do. Give them another day off! God Bless them.

I guarantee you Betty Chavers didn’t need this in 1989 to deal with a bunch of 10 year olds. She also never called us her kiddos or acted like she was our friend. She was the boss and ran her classroom.

Should’ve let the teachers return for a half day today with no students so they could get their classes ready and then start back up like normal on Monday.

We go back Monday and today was a teacher work day.
Elearning days are futile, it isn't like during covid when they actually had live instruction over zoom . Our teachers either give a worksheet or message "here's a link to the assignment and my office hours are from 8am to 9am if you have any questions".
My favorite was the year we had bad weather the first day of school so the district declared it an elearning day instead of using one of the designated weather/make up days. None of the kids had laptops or access to their classroom portals.

Some districts have several Teacher In-Service/Development days scheduled throughout the semester. Basically, these are days that the teachers work but kids are off.
When we were kids, these were usually a week before school started and a week after school ended to do their required professional development training. Some distsricts decided to basically let teachers finish with the students, so now they shove them into random days throughout the year and extending the school year by two weeks.
Some of it is to not inconvenience the teachers when there kids finish school and are out for 2 weeks while they are still working. Others feel it is just to allow it to be spread out.
In the end, it is a significant burden on parents that work seeing as others have said it is harder to schedule a random day off here and there than a week or two during vacation.
In the end, its just annoying, but my kids' schools don't go back Monday either as it is an in service day.

Kids around these parts don’t go back to Wednesday, the 8th.

1) Teachers sign a contract based on the number of days they are required to work.
2) Those contracts also require continuing education days. You cant be given credit for advancing your base knowledge, while also being required to monitor kids. Those non-student days are scheduled on the calendar
3) Most districts try to schedule CE days around another calendar break, so that parents wont be inconvenienced with multiple single day breaks through the school year
4) Courts have ruled that expecting teachers to work outside their contracted days requires reimbursement. So districts can no longer force teachers to do attend CE during weekends, holidays, and summer breaks . . . for free

I don’t remember any virtual learning days before Covid happened. Lots of places around the country, including parts of SE Louisiana didn’t know anything about students bringing computers home until Covid. After Covid slowed down, students bringing home laptops home every day also stopped because of wear and tear on the
laptops. It’s pretty clear, and easy to see that “Virtual Days” happen more frequently, simply because School Boards can give the OK to send the laptops home if it gets to cold, or the wind gusts might get up to 20mph. The days are worked into the schedule, but those days weren’t used in the past as frequently as they are now.

Districts should utilize actual designated non-student days for teachers instead stacking them with student elearning as a work around to get to their 180 (or whatever) days of instruction without dipping into inclement weather days or extending the school year.
I just realized that if our district has to use the inclement weather days this year, they will be elearning days. That is new and actually low key brilliant.

I don’t have kids, but I honestly can’t imagine how parents manage to juggle work when there are so many unexpected school closure days.
From what I’ve seen on Facebook, a lot of parents weren’t even aware of this particular day off, and they’re frustrated about having to miss work to stay home with their kids—especially when school was supposed to resume as normal.
Apparently, this kind of thing happens a lot, where the school district decides last-minute to switch to virtual school for a day. It’s no wonder so many parents are upset - but, they gotta' make the teachers happy!
That's the problem with having the most important function of your public education system be babysitting.

They bitch about working 8 months out of the year for $50k. It’s wild

Always love these teacher shaming threads.
None of you MFers could do what they do, putting up with all those little bastards all day, every day. I sure as hell wouldn’t.

Teachers need a day to prepare for their job but it’s ok to take another day away from the parents who were expected to show up to work Monday morning prepared after the holidays?
Not to mention most parents had to take vacation this Thursday and Friday, not necessarily by choice but because their kids were still home.

My stepdaughter is a teacher and until now I never fully realized just how many days a year they have off work.
She started in mid August, got Labor Day off, a week off for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks off for Christmas/New Years, then there's Mardi Gras, Easter and the Spring Break before getting 2 1/2 months off for summer vacation.
Then throw in the liberal sick leave she gets and she could milk it to work maybe 8 full weeks a school year.

Hence why I didn’t choose that profession.
I couldn’t do their job, they couldn’t do mine, and I couldn’t do yours (unless you’re a fry chef, then I could probably figure that out).
