My wife (no pics) works at a hospital and it has been closed from the flooding and is not scheduled to open until Wednesday. They are making their employees burn their PTO days even though the hospital is shut down.

Is this the norm for PTO?

That doesn't round right at all to me but Texas labor laws are different from Louisiana labor laws. What a classy move too by her employer.

That's ridiculous. I'd be looking for a new job.

That's awful. For Isaac, I wanna say, if we couldn't report to work we got paid for our shift regardless. I don't work for a hospital though. Still messed up.

Why wouldn't they just not pay them for that time rather than make them burn PTO?

She works for a harris county hospital. Sounds like labor laws are MUCH different between TX and LA.

PTO = Power Take Off. It drives the mower behind my tractor. I have no idea what PTO means to you. Very confusing.

I worked for a hospital in BR. ours was a little different. You had two options

1. Come to work and help out. May not be your job, Could just be helping out around the hospital to keep things running. You got paid, no PTO used
2. Don't come in and use your PTO. I think the logic is we are not going to give you a free day off

I went with option 2. I didn't want to be on the road if not necessary

She is on the recovery team, not the ride-out. So she has to wait for official notification that her unit has been re-opened. Trust me, if she were able to go in and help out to avoid burning PTO, she would.

Not given that option, sadly.
