What a classy move too by her employer.

Why should her employer pay her for time not worked?

I doubt it was. They probably just said "if you want to get paid, then you can use PTO".

This thread reveals who never has PTO vs those that work hourly/salaried.

My thoughts?

Suck it up and use her PTO. Be happy that it even exists. She is not working, she should not get paid.

What if she was a hairdresser? A small business owner like a painter/plumber/landscaper? What I did she got paid for each person seen like a masseuse?

In all those cases, they would get zero. Nothing. Nada.

And they would not be on the web talking about how they got screwed over by someone big company.

Instead- choose to look at EVERY paid day off as a gift not a basic right that you deserve.

(First world problem)

I guess it depends how the company operates and defines PTO. My current employer has given admin leave if the entire office cannot make it in, and in some extenuating circumstances, to individuals who have problems.

My previous employer made every employee use PTO when the office closed for a week to cut costs.

My personal opinion: bad move by the employer. This is a natural disaster of a magnitude we have never seen before. Bad, bad move.

In Louisiana, about 4-5 years ago, there was a cat 1 storm that hit New Orleans, and stopped for days. LaPlace flooded badly. My company's office building in Metairie was without power for several days. I got paid off the entire time, without using any PTO. And I don't work in the office. I'm a field guy that's hourly. It was a very good gesture, and let me know I was working for a good company.

Sounds shitty on the Hospital's part.

Usually during natural disasters Companies will just pay their employees unless you are hourly, I guess then you are screwed.

My company had some idiot threaten to shoot the place up after getting fired, we all got the next day off paid.

Tell your wife I have 80 hours of PTO I'll trade her for some b##B pics

During the 2011 tornadoes our facility was without power for 2 weeks. We all had to use pto to cover the paycheck. The company did come back and give the option of working unpaid OT the next several months to replace pto burned during that time. That was an OK deal to the people that were OT exempt anyway, but the hourly guys got screwed.

I'm hourly, but I still got paid for a week at a Nola hurricane. But on a regular rain storm, I get screwed. But even with rain, it's rare that I don't get 40 hours in 4 days.

The answer for this is whether she/he is exempt or non-exempt.
