To be fair, you can replace your original post with any make and model out there. Every brand will have customers with bad experiences.
On the other hand, my experience with a 2013 Santa Fe Limited (the sister car to the Sorrento) has been nearly flawless. No issues outside of a few minor recall fixes and a leak in the AC line that was fixed under warranty. I will say, I do my own maintenance at accelerated intervals.
In fact, the Hyundai has been much more reliable than the VW, Audi, and Volvo that we've had in the same timeframe. I had some nightmares with those brands.
A quick Google search of car brand reliability has plenty of results with Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis in the top ten for long term reliability. The brand has come a LONG way recently.
VW is near the bottom of many long-term reliability lists, FYI.

Out of the frying pan into the fire. Maybe look at a Mazda CX-9 if you want something that looks good, reliable and doesnt cost a fortune.....and isnt a Toyota or Honda.

Did kinda assume is was good cause it was a VW. Thought they were always highly regarded for safety and rely?
VW like all German cars rank very high on safety especially when you consider both active and passive safety. VW for a very long time has been lower 1/3rd in reliability sure they have gotten better but all cars have, relatively they are still poor. The new Kia/Hyundai mid-sized crossovers get high marks but still early on in the life cycle so it can be deceiving (or dead accurate). Subaru and Mazda are also solid but they have less of a following and the Subby comes with some social baggage.
Toyota/Lexus in general is near the top of all reliability reports partially because they tend to stay a couple of years behind in using the newest and greatest tech toys. Some people hate this, some people appreciate it.
The 3.5L engine in the Highlander is a 400,000-mile engine easy when decently maintained. It is unlikely you will have to touch the engine or auxiliary engine systems for at least 300K. Sometime after that you will likely have to replace the ignition coils which is maybe a $1100 job or a 3 hours job and $400 in (internet ordered) parts if you are handy with a wrench. Once they got rid of the oil baking issues in the 3.0 that engine family has been bulletproof.
In the end, every car is a roll of the die but if you want to hedge your bet then Toyota/Lexus is a good choice across the board. The two negatives are they don't have the highest level of gadgetry for the day and they are all driving appliances, Toyota/Lexus has never built a thrilling driver's car in a given segment even the LFA is mundane among its peers.

Mine said they hate working on Toyota's & Honda's because they only see their customers for oil changes, brake jobs & tune ups.

Brand new the MSRP was 41 or 43k

We've had two KIAs, a 2014, and traded that one in for a 2019 and actually had some equity in it at the time of trade. Only major issue was the A/C went out at about 80K miles on the 2014. That's when we traded in rather than fix it. It also needed new tires and brakes so we figured just start over brand new.

Write this 10 times on a sheet of paper

Everybody that I know that has one has door handles that are missing. Apparently that's not covered under warranty either.

There was a Kia mechanic on TikTok who got fired for showing how shitty their 2.4l motor was.... heat show 10 to 15 vehicles in the service department that were undergoing engine replacements. They would have 15 to 20 pallets of brand new 2.4 L motors sitting in the service department

My wife has a Telluride and loves it. No issues this far.
Sorry bro, seems like you got a lemon.

Dam, VW sucks too????
The diesels are pretty sweet, but you won't find them here any longer thanks to dieselgate. Their gas engines......meh. They aren't known for reliability.

My wife chose a 2014 Optima over accord, civic, Camry, maxima...etc
I threw a fit and fought it tooth and nail.
6 years 110k miles down the line, we’ve had two issues.
Issue 1 - My wife blew the speakers because she blasts rap like she’s from Compton. Kia replaced them no problem.
Issue 2 - Recently heard a knock in the engine. Brought it to the dealer at 110k miles and Kia replaced the motor and gave us a free rental for the 10 days it was in the shop.
Wife wants a Telluride and she will provably be getting one in the next year or two.

I've read the same, but the Hyundai/Kia Lambda V6 engine is known to be quite reliable, both the previous gen 3.3L and current gen 3.8L versions. Being direct injection, just have to be religious with the oil changes and use fuel system/valve cleaners every few months.
