Dozens of protesters marched through the streets of Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, demanding action after Portland State University police shot and killed a Navy veteran.

Cellphone video captured the early Friday incident when, witnesses say, Jason Washington was trying to break up a fight.

This isn't the first time tensions have risen at the university over armed campus safety officers.

Students have been strongly opposed since the policy began in 2015. One protester said she feared that it was only a matter of time before someone got killed.

CBS News correspondent David Begnaud reports the incident occurred Friday after a fight started to escalate outside a sports bar. According to witnesses, the 45-year-old Washington, who is seen in cellphone video carrying a gun on his right hip, tried to intervene, but fell during the scuffle.

Washington's gun apparently fell from its holster. Witnesses said campus police opened fire when he tried to pick it up.

Washington was a U.S. Navy veteran who worked for the post office. Police told reporters he had a concealed carry permit for his handgun.

"He was a veteran who fought for our country," said Mohammed Tuffa, who says he was involved in the fight. He said police didn't need to use deadly force. "Pepper spray could have broken everybody out. Everybody would have been on the ground crying."

The two officers involved, Shawn McKenzie and James Dewey, have been placed on administrative leave.

On Sunday more than 100 protesters marched to Portland State University wearing black and carrying signs demanding justice in the campus police shooting of Washington.

Who would agree to be a police officer in Portland? You would never be able to do anything to the satisfaction of the citizens.

Case closed. It's unfortunate, but keep your gun holstered. It's pretty simple

I feel for the guy, the cops, and anyone else involved. Personally, I don't carry when I'm out drinking because of shite like this.

Yeah, they were all acting with fair intentions. It just made a very unfortunate turn.

Yep. This is pretty much a nightmare scenario that you can do nothing about. This shite will unfortunately happen, albeit very rarely.

I feel bad the guy got killed. Sounds like terrible situation all around.
However, I don't carry a gun when out drinking. Was he drinking? Guns and booze equal bad combo.

Also, why does it matter that he was in Navy?

reads better..tries to shift the blame from him...People will say "but he was trained in the military to handle weapons so he knew what he was doing"..from the looks of that picture though, he did not know what he was doing

When there is a huge brawl going on, reaching for a loaded pistol which has fallen to the ground isn’t your best move.

This. Because media likes to spice up the story.

Why are you at a sports bar, or near any downtown sort of area with crowds of people with a gun on you. Part of the course you take to obtain your conceal carry permit addresses this exact thing as something not to do.

If I have a gun strapped to my side, I am absolutely not about to jump into a scuffle of random people.

Maybe he wasn't at the bar, or maybe it wasn't random people... definitely a horrible situation nonetheless.

I think he forgot about the conceal part of the concealed weapons permit he had.

If we had to put blame on someone, I guess I would put it on Washington. The gun doesn't seem to be all that secure. Well, it is secure if he isn't going to be rolling around breaking up fights, but when police come to a scene, sees a gun fly out and someone goes to grab it. What are they suppose to think? "Let me wait to see if he shoots people first".
