And in a vacation club you don't have to worry about trading. You just book if you have the points.

we've been having one in destin for almost 20 years. Every week of the 4th of july. It has paid for itself many times over, even though Destin has become less than desirable to go to. But it is really easy to sell or trade

My parent's have one in Cashiers, NC that has been pretty phenomenal. They go up there a ton. They get there guaranteed time and then any time there isn't anyone using it or another in their group of cabins, they can use them. They can also trade in time at their timeshare towards other places around the world. They got a really cheap deal on a place to stay in Italy through whatever the group is.

That however is the only time I've ever heard anything good about a timeshare.

In fact when someone mentions they have a timeshare somewhere, I automatically lose all respect for them.

I feel the same way. Kind of like hearing someone say that they are going to try crack or herion. It's one of the dumbest things you can do.

Which timeshare company do you work for?

Don't work for any timeshare company bud. I just did my research and bought at a place that was fairly new and had low maintenance fees. Over the 15 years we have owned there, fees have gone up from $715/year to $750/year, which is negligible. If you vacation multiple times a year and do it right, it can work. Most don't put in the time to know what they are getting.

why do people voluntarily put themselves in situations like this? esp with airbnb/homeway etc time sharing is mindblowingly dumb

Good luck getting a 3 bedroom condo Air bnb in a nice ski resort town for $750 for the week. Wife is a teacher, so we only vacation on holiday weeks or the summer. Planning a year ahead is not that big of a deal. Again, it doesn't work for everyone, but if you do it right it can work financially.

Pros: You might be able to get a free or highly discounted trip if you agree to sit through their sales pitch for an hour or 2, and have enough restraint/common sense not to get suckered in and buy.

Cons: Spending a ton of money on buying the timeshare and then annual maintenance fees. Same resort over and over, unless you go through extra trouble to workout trades with someone who has a timeshare somewhere different.

I understand why so many people are against these sort of things, but they aren't always bad. I would never personally buy one (don't want to be locked into limited options every year), but I know some people who have bought one (or more) and have made great use of it and really enjoyed it. These people also only bought what they could afford.

On the other hand, The Dave Ramsey show always has some horror stories in regards to people making horrible financial decisions (in regards to time shares). He also promotes something called Time share exit (they are a sponsor of his) as a solution for people trying to get rid of their timeshare.

Basically every individual's situation is different. I personally don't think I will ever buy into a timeshare.

we bought one for $250.00 with a $500 dollar annual fee. 4 out of 7 years it falls the week of the 4th of July. It was great before kids but a one bedroom condo at the beach with 2 kids isn't exactly a good time. We will probably try to rent it out for the next few years but its kind of a pain.

Timeshare

One of the worst scams going today. Those who hawk timeshares are evil incarnate. Would rather deal with used car salesmen.

Parents have one. nice to get a week when they arent using their points up.

but not worth it in the long run. They had to pay for point up front. then pay over $200/mo for maintenance fees. with the hassle of never finding the exact place you want at the exact week slot you want, i would rather just pay as i go and have more options....

My inlaws do well with theirs, they manage it online and always get us some great place. They have multiple time shares that are part of groups. You can save your week and double up the next year.

That said, I'd rather rent a condo for twice the price and not have the hassle.

Unless you are talking about the Disney Vacation Club, there are NO pros. Don't buy a Timeshare, unless it is DVC.

The only timeshare I've ever seen that made sense to most people is Disney Vacation Club. Disney doesn't do one thing half arse.

Timeshares are like Whole Life Insurance. There are a few good options out there that make sense if you are in a few certain situations.

But for the vast majority of people and the vast majority of timeshares, they are not a good investment.

If you really want to buy one, look in the re-sale market.

The biggest problem is the annual fees, which can increase and never end. And just become a growing burden year after year. Look for something that has some limitations.

The vacation club idea is a little better, but only if 1) you normally take a luxury vacation whenever you travel and 2) you can pay cash for it. Financing it generally destroys the math.

I have nothing to add to this discussion, but I found it hilarious that the ad at the bottom of was page was a "Need out of a timeshare?" website.

A friend from New England has one in her family. The family has always gone to the Berkshires one specific week in summer. That's where and when their timeshare is. They use it as a family reunion and have for going on twenty years.

They know the restaurants, the book stores, the little shops and for them it's stress free.

I can't imagine liking that level of 'nothing new here'.
