And University.
He attended university in 2005.
Why is the article “the” not used by Europeans and some media elites here in THE USA?

the is kind of implied.
When I was younger you may have heard me say: I am going/went/from/to school. Notice I Did not say I am going to THE school. It isnt wrong to say going to the school, but its kinda unnecessary.
He attended university in 2005, is perfectly correct.
It would be more odd to say he attended the university in 2005.

What about their weird plural/singular usage with sports teams:
Manchester United have won
Tottenham have a great crowd
Manchester United have won
Tottenham have a great crowd

"He went to school."
This implies that he went there for the purpose for which that place is designed, i.e., to be educated.
"He went to the school."
This implies that he went there as a visitor and not for the actual purpose of the building in question.

And they call zero null, the letter Z “zed,” and pronounce “aluminum” incorrectly.
