Japan reported a record number of daily coronavirus infections Thursday, amid a worrying spike in a country that has been spared the worst of the pandemic and hopes to host the Olympics next year.

Compared to many other countries, Japan has done well combatting the virus, reporting just under 2,000 deaths in a nation of 126 million since the pandemic began. But Tokyo saw a record number of single-day cases twice this week, and the Health Ministry said Thursday that the national number hit a record with 2,179 new cases.

That's the first time Japan has had more than 2,000 daily cases since the pandemic began. The previous high was set Saturday.

I guarantee that the Japanese wear masks religiously. When I have spent time there years ago, there were a number of mask wearers then, generally elderly. And anyone else who has been to Japan can verify this, too.

This is proof that masks are useless, if the Japanese are experiencing a spike in cases, then masks are not helping stop the spread.

ETA: my point is that if wearing masks would prevent spikes, obviously not eliminate it.
again, I'm certain the Japanese are very diligent about proper mask wearing, yet here is this spike.

Why is dying of covid unacceptable but dying of flu is fine? Who made this determination?

They are effective when combined with full PPE (face shield, goggles, etc) used by ER docs. That’s not really practical for all of us though.

A surgical or fabric mask isn’t really going to be working for anyone on a crowded train or elevator. Wearing them outside where you can socially distant is silly, although I don’t have a problem if businesses want to mandate their use indoors. Just don't expect it to do much.

Yet a majority of the new cases report being diligent mask wearers...

Masks are useless. Fact. You know what works? Good hygiene.

It's almost like there is something else at play here when it comes to these "spikes." I don't know, there may be some sort of seasonal component to it all rather than any mitigation strategies...

Edit to add:
Downvoters can get fricked!

It's been apparent for a while that there is some sort of seasonal component to this thing. Article out today:
quote:

Higher Covid death rates are observed in the [25/65°] latitude and in the [-35/-125°] longitude ranges. The national criteria most associated with death rate are life expectancy and its slowdown, public health context (metabolic and non-communicable diseases (NCD) burden vs. infectious diseases prevalence), economy (growth national product, financial support), and environment (temperature, ultra-violet index). Stringency of the measures settled to fight pandemia, including lockdown, did not appear to be linked with death rate.

The top countries in deaths per capita have all done lockdowns and masks.

So you think having more cases than before is proof that masks are useless.

I am guessing you have a humanities degree.

Every good doctor and surgeon you know pulls masks out of their pockets and car cupholders before doing their jobs!

We don't need additional proof. Masks are a placebo that placate imbeciles and make them feel better. They do NOT stop the spread of a virus. They don't slow it down. It's a waste of time.

So you’re just gonna ignore how low the total number is when claiming they are useless?

Have you watched how 90% of Americans wear their masks? They touch them constantly, they touch their faces constantly after touching masks, reuse them, store them in nasty places, wear below their noses, etc.

How can it be determined that all of that isn't making it worse or having no net impact on numbers?

I feel masks are like a crutch. They make people feel better. They make people feel protected. They don't do anything though. The real key is distance and hand washing i think.

How do you know the current spike wouldnt be worse without masks? The argument has never been that masks are 100%
