American English has just changed less than British English. The British pronounciation of Tomato is a good example of that. It’s a 19th century shift.

Just got off the phone with a friend of mine that was giving me directions and said to turn left at the liberry and I told him it’s pronounced library. He told me we both got a degree from the same college. He then explained how he used to pronounce words correctly in college but no longer does....what is this phenomenon called exactly?

Evidently its origins are in latin's schedula(scheda-Italy) which would be pronounced as in U.S.
England is wrong

English may be considered Germanic because of grammar but it's 60% Italic (30 latin/30 french).

Or you know language is a living evolving thing that changes over time and American English is closer to the original thing before the divergence, and you're just ignorant as frick and have a stronger opinion of your intellect than you have any right to have.

Euro announcers always seem to use the plurals verbs when they talk about their sports teams.

Euros say, "Liverpool are playing again Sunday."

We say New Orleans is playing again Sunday."

quote:

Brighton boss Chris Hughton says Liverpool are favourites to lift the Premier League title but "wouldn't put money on it".

I don't think the team is one unit in their way of thinking. The team are a bunch of players to them. They are wrong.

Correct. When they sent a cable to the US to announce the discovery, a mistake was made in the spelling. Thus the reason it's spelled and pronounced differently here.
