Small, relatively poor country, but it leads Europe in education and ranks just below the Asian powerhouses.
Good article that talks about their approach...
Estonia Article

AI Summary:
quote:

Estonia has emerged as Europe's top-performing country in education by emphasizing equality, autonomy, and digital integration within its school system. The nation provides universal free school lunches, heavily subsidizes kindergarten to ensure early childhood education, and grants schools the freedom to tailor curricula to their students' needs. Initiatives like the 1997 Tiigrihüpe (Tiger Leap) have embedded digital skills across subjects, while a focus on creative disciplines such as arts and music fosters well-rounded development. This comprehensive approach has propelled Estonia to the forefront of European education rankings.

Estonia has been on the rise for at least close to a decade now.

There is always the ever present threat of russia, but as time moves along it's becoming more closely aligned with the likes of Sweden, Finland, and Norway in terms of QoL than Ukraine, Belarus, and Latvia.

We get €300 per month in Germany for Kindergeld. I wonder what they are paying in Estonia.

In the late 90s I met a exchange student from Estonia-

Her English was perfect and it was her 4th best language (Estonia, Finnish, Russian) she also spoke German.

Her high school would only give her high school credit for her classes in American History, and English. Her science and math classes didn't count, she was attending a then magnet school in New Orleans.

I'll tell you:

Married couple families account for 55% of all families, while a further 27% are consensual union couples.

Also..

Parents in Estonia receive 475 days of paid leave after the birth of a child.
The parental benefit is paid to the parent that stays at home with the child, after the end of the maternity benefit.

The parental benefit is paid at the amount of 100% of the average earnings for 435 days. Together the maternity benefit and the parental benefit are paid for a period of 575 days (1.5 years).

One cool thing is the Finno-urgic language group is pretty much the only one in Europe not descended from Proto-Indo-European.

I live in Latvia and also own and operate a business in Estonia so I am there at least two or three times a month. We (Latvia) and Estonia are very close in many things, maybe they are a step ahead, but to put us (Latvia) in a league with Stalinesque Belarus is absurd. (Ukraine is also better than you think, at least it was before the war, that is partly why Putin invaded, a democratizing Ukraine become more wealthy and western was putting pressure on him to do the same. He didn't want to change.

In fact Estonia is behind Latvia by two years in using AI in Education, though they are advertising it a lot.

Estonia is a great place to retire for Americans.
