I've been considering a steam powered car. Sounds like coal will be getting even cheaper than it is now.

I'm looking forward to it. They are mush simpler and should have fewer problems than our relatively complex ICE powered vehicles.
It will take a while. Our power grid isn't ready. You're talking about a massive energy transfer from gas, that has to be delivered to our garages instead via power.
Also raw materials--those batteries are made up of some fairly precious stuff.
Would be nice to see vehicles start to be more practical and less "lifestyle projecting." It's always bugged me that we choose to polish these things to a high mirror shine, only to have them hurtle through the world. It's built-in obsolescence.

I don't think anyone is denying this. However, ICE vehicles have range, refueling and infrastructure advantages now and for the foreseeable future. The current electrical grid does not have the capacity for tens of millions of electric vehicles (especially in high population areas that already have capacity issues).
Even if these can be overcome (or the gap appreciably reduced) you still have limitations. Electric vehicles have inherent disadvantages in colder climates.

In a not very distant future, self driving cars will make automated transport cheap and efficient. Families may own a single car for everyone to use or, more likely, services similar to Uber/Lyft but with automated cars will be used a lot more.

That's basically what a Chevy Volt was except it was gasoline powered. But then they went out of production. Wasn't as efficient as the way Toyota did the hybrid system in Prius.
I think various versions of weak to moderate hybrids will become more mainstream in the next 10 years. The new Lincoln Aviator has hybrid system that combines a turbo V6 with a electric motor between the engine and transmission. Total output is 494 hp and 630 lb-ft torque. But not really made for economy.

I'm not opposed to them either but it would take me a hell of a long time to recoup the extra cost (if i ever would) over the $75/month I spend on gas.
The only routine maintenance needed are tires and washer wiper fluid...that's it.
When you factor in all of that for total cost of ownership, a $40k car after 5-7 years I'd guess cost about the same as a $25-30k car.

What’s funny is I have a 2005 hybrid. It’s electric and gas and my tag is more than a gas only engine which to me is bullshite!

I can see system where something hanging from the bottom of the car will come in contact with a power source on the road / or parking spot. This would power/charge a car. Kind of like the 3rd rail in a subway station.
Wireless could be an option further down the road.

Energy density of lithium batteries today have changed very little in the last 15 years, they are cheaper but the fundamental chemistry is still the same. There are other chemistries but they rely on extremely toxic, unstable, or commercially unsuitable designs. Charging times are a matter of techniques like pre-cooling the battery packs and better algorithms to force feed the batteries but there are still limits due to the chemistry.

Unless you need a full charge, each stop is 10 minutes generally speaking.
I see charges getting up over 500 miles/hour but it slows down a ton towards the end if you need to fully charge.
When you route trips, you generally charge for 10 minutes and that's it.
