It will take a while. Our power grid isn't ready. You're talking about a massive energy transfer from gas, that has to be delivered to our garages instead via power.
Beyond imagination? Let's do some quick math:
US electricity consumption is about 14 quadrillion BTU per year.
In the US we drive a little over 3 trillion vehicle miles per year.
A Tesla, for example, uses about 0.31 kWh per mile driven. Let's round that way, way up and call it 0.5 kWh per mile, or 1,700 BTU per mile.
Multiplying, if every single vehicle in the US was converted to an EV, that would add 5.1 quadrillion BTU to our electricity needs.
Anybody want to fact check or check my math? I'm sure there's an error somewhere. Revised energy consumption to 14 quadrillion BTU. A 35% increase in electricity production does not sound "beyond imagination" to me, especially considering the vast majority of that additional load will be overnight off-peak charging.

I think Tesla predicts 25-30 years due to the current lifespan of vehicles.

lol. How much of the oil industry depends on the use of gasoline and diesel in internal combustion engines?
