Landry’s tax plan, passed by the Louisiana Legislature in November, cuts individual income and corporate taxes by $1.2 billion in the next fiscal year, according to the latest revenue projections. But that reduction is offset by a boost of $1.3 billion in sales tax collections, largely thanks to an increase in the general sales tax rate from 4.45% to 5%.

So we are paying our taxes and for the corporations' tax cuts? Hahahaha who could've seen that coming?

Guy is a clown, but I support consumption taxes over any other type. And I love a balanced budget. So good for him for shifting the tax collection mechanism more towards consumption over income, which I think is the right move.

Truth. This is a much better direction of how taxes should be pulled.

Supporting higher taxes in the name of the type of tax is one of the more retarded things I’ve ever heard

You'd understand it better if you spent more money buying tax exempt stuff like stocks and bonds, than on retail goods and services.

Sales taxes are for poors.

The conversation is that we can't cut government spending because it will piss of resident leftists. Who are these leftists that people like Jeff Landry need to placate?

Who are these leftists that the 70% republican legislature needs to placate?

Most people who pay income taxes already are going to come out better with the income tax reduction, even with the sales tax hike.

Calculate the impact on your state income tax

I'm going to come out $1500 a year better on income tax, which I promise is more than what I'll pay with the sales tax hike.

The people who are coming out worse from this are the ones who don't pay income tax anyway. Like illegals and people who get paid cash and try to avoid taxes by under-reporting their income.

We can’t cut spending because Louisiana republicans aren’t conservatives. They’re mostly social-spending welfare state Democrats who changed their affiliation in the early 2000’s.

Senator Miguez was admonished directly by the governor for asking that question.

That’s something that could get interesting going forward. Landry and Miguez were supposed to be tight allies in all this, and them both being Iberia Parish baws could make it more interesting if there becomes a split.

How can something raise revenue and most people will be better off? That fundamentally doesn’t reconcile

People tend to overlook this fact when calling Louisiana a “blood red” state. It’s a lazy characterization
