Seems like a risky strategy. But they do have “Gamble” in the name for a reason.

So, capitalism at work? Imagine that...Companies that have both marketed themselves successfully for years as a household name/brand have been exposed the past several years as being equal or sometimes less dependable/preferable than the "knock-off brand company product.

They can't be mad that today's consumer is far more informed than ever, and willing to compare/contrast like products to determine what is the best buy for the money.

They could raise the price to $40 a roll on TP and I’d pay it.

Life’s too short to not have quality shite tickets.

Oh, you go cheap on TP? Enjoy your doo doo finger and a-hole full of paper wads.

It's clearly a pricing racket with all personal paper products.

Like Charmin TP or Bounty paper towels. You can buy big, large, huge, and mega.
Knowing that prices are usually cheaper when you buy more at a time, it is still confusing.
I couldn't tell you right now if a 4 roll pack of mega size is cheaper than a 12 roll pack of large size.

Yeah but they're not losing business due to just an oversaturated market, they're losing business to Walmart and dollar general brand toilet paper and paper towels because of price difference and because it's toilet paper and paper towels. The diaper thing is what it is, parents will go for expensive shite their first go-round and then loosen up on the 2nd one.

Correct. So they’ve determined they have lost the price-conscious shopper and will pursue the shopper that is focused on quality (perceived and real). Those buyers have a higher threshold when buying these products.

This is nothing new.

I have yet to find toilet paper as good as charmin so I'm gonna pay it.

I like Cottonelle more myself. Basically same softness, cheaper, and Charmin falls apart too easily at times for the tough jobs

We tried every different brand of diapers. Thank baby Jesus, the ones that worked and fit best on my daughter were the Sam's club brand. That has saved us 100's of dollars thus far

Up & Up is legit. In the beginning when our twins were born, we tried to use the name brands and they all sucked. either leaked or left rashes. Tried Up & Up and they have been amazing.

We stick with Kirkland for wipes though. Those things are so great I think I could wipe my arse with them too if I was swampy.

Not saying P&G will be one, but the fall of these big brands over the next 20 years is going to be glorious.

Seth Godin wrote a book called "Tribes" that talks a lot about the reason these big brands get snuck up on by these little invaders.

Also, Amazon Subscription FTW on these household purchases. I have Diapers, Wipes, Toilet Paper, and Paper Towels at my door every month or every other month. Used to hate going to the store to buy these things.

The ugly truth on some products, not all. I used to make trash bags for a name brand company. We also made custom brands. Store brand if you will. The difference between the name brand and store brand, besides price, is the box it's in. The product was exactly the same. Since then I pay more attention to stuff I buy.

Yes. We compare name brand and private label prices all the time and get the one that's the best value, not always just the cheapest.

People started buying for price only and we got what we deserved: Walmart and its delinquent children Dollar General, Family Dollar etc.

There's a Family Dollar and a Dollar General in a little town near my farm. Went into both looking for super glue - the stores were appalling - packed with cheap crap crammed on shelves. I'll pass next time.

Buy for quality not price and this problem resolves itself. Buy for the lowest price and we'll have more low quality products sold by people who pay less than a living wage and whose wage structure requires government subsidies for their employees.

Discount store owners - scum of the earth.

I remember seeing a piece on cnbc about costco and their biggest seller was kirklands toilet paper.

I was listening to Clark Howard on Bill Handel and they were talking about how bad kirklands toilet paper sucked.
