Filling up a little black book with phone numbers, and memorizing important phone numbers.

Making a phone call from a pay phone, but then you better have your little black book or have the number memorized.

Placing a collect call

Operating a rotary phone

The thrill of finding change at a pay phone or coke machine coin return slot.

Throwing a newspaper route on your bike. Then collecting subscription money from your customers -
including the deadbeats.

Playing sandlot baseball with worn out baseballs, cracked bats and cardboard bases.

Neighborhood fights. All is forgotten an hour later.

A good friend of mine lived right by the train trestle in high school. We spent a lot of time back in what's now the park drinking, riding 4 wheelers and causing all kinds of mischief.

Placing a collect call

I remember doing this when we were ready to get picked up from the mall or wherever. We'd agree on a place beforehand and place the collect call from "ok, we're ready" so we didn't have to pay.

The simple things, like the neighborhood grocery. Life without a cell phone. The ability to be alone in the backcountry of a national park; you need a reservation these days. Not being able to leave the door unlocked. Stopping at a traffic light without having to look around. Bottle coke machines. .........

I "forget" my cellphone at home more and more

Yesterday I took my dog to a local hiking trail, and before leaving my daughter caught me and said “You’re forgetting your phone, what will you do if something happens?”

I replied, “whatever I did for the 22 years I didn’t have a phone.”

Speaking of phones- kids today will never understand the feeling of either slamming the phone down on someone or having that done to you. Hitting the “hang up” button doesn’t have that same feeling.

Speaking of phones-
My first girlfriend had a Mom that was on their phone about 90 percent of the evenings, one night I decided that I really needed to speak to her and called the operator to do an 'emergency breakthrough' Yeah, that went over very, very well. Another lesson todays kids will never learn. I may be the only person in the world dumb enough to do it though

Not necessarily teenagers, but

Making a baseball out of balled up paper and masking tape so you could get a game going

Taking a physical video game, putting another ridiculous looking device on it and jamming it unnaturally into a console so you could have the cheat codes

Needling an elaborate excuses to smoke pot and drink - no really we just really enjoy camping in the woods behind my buddy's house in the suburbs

Field parties without electronic devices except for battery powered boomboxes
