I got my private at Fly By Knight in Hammond. Great school, and cheapest rates. They also fly 7 days a week so it's easier to fit into your schedule if you have a regular Mon-Fri job. And, as someone said earlier, do King Schools online for FAA written exam prep. It's 275 bucks instead of a couple thousand paying an instructor for ground.

It was less, but I know it was $50 per hour of classroom and I didn't get much from it. What jaded me was anytime the plane was down and I was just around, I was getting hit classroom time.
I don't recommend Flight Academy, but that's who I used.

My Plane. only one of 2 Green V tails ordered from the factory. The other is based in California so if you see it in the South it’s me.

I don’t know if ol Sam Watley is still doing check rides out of Gonzales, but if he is and when the time comes........ good luck. He’s fair but he’s a hard arse.

Retired a few years ago, and soon after that he passed away. He was a good guy that, by his own admission forced the pilot to think.

McDonald Flying Service at BTR. He has a deal where you can join the club and just pay for fuel. I've flown with a lot of instructors and he's one of the best

Absolutely agree to get true written out of the way before flying. X plane is great for instrument if you can find a setup like your plane.

Go with either Fly By Knight or Aviation Specialists, inc. I’ve rented from ASI and can vouch for Christine Marchand. She is a very good CFI. I’ve also heard nothing but good things about Fly By Knight as well.

You a doctor? If so, is your life insurance all paid up?
