I fly with GCA, working on PPL. They use the Cessna/king online ground school and the 172 they use for training is G1000. They are also a 141 school, if that is important to you.

Can personally vouch for Sharon at Fly By Knight. I recommend you go see them.

Good luck, make sure you have the money saved before you start. Starting and stopping because of cash flow will, at worst, ensure you never finish, and at best, make sure you get your certificate at about twice the cost.

I recommend having $7500 saved to cover flight hours, testing fees, and books.

I don’t think they have any light sports over there.

If you provide your own light sport I wouldn’t be surprised if Sharon could instruct in it.

Yea I only had to stop because I was in college and my dad was funding me and I was too concerned with chasing skirts around tigerland instead of flying and pissed away the opportunity so he pulled his financial aid so now I’ve saved enough to finish. Lesson learned the hard way

FBK is great. They’re just in Hammond.

I wish there was a FBK BTR location.

Go get the written test out the way first. Don't pay $50 an hour for instructing on written. Hammond usually has a 6 part class. But they have online schools. Get your written passed and then do flight training. Then you just have to pay for your 30-40 hours dual instruction plus plane rental

I would also add to go ahead and get the medical exam out of the way. No point in investing money in lessons only to find you can not fly due to a health issue or something as simple as a medication you are taking. Been many years since i was up on the requirements so things today may be different today.

I don’t know if ol Sam Watley is still doing check rides out of Gonzales, but if he is and when the time comes........ good luck. He’s fair but he’s a hard arse.

Retired a few years ago, and soon after that he passed away. He was a good guy that, by his own admission forced the pilot to think.

Did a check ride with him in 1997, it was a cool fall day, and I needed a dry shirt when I got out of the plane.

Interesting topic. I am curious as to whether you want to learn from the lowest priced place. I have toyed with the idea of getting my license as well.

I have a couple hundred hours ASEL but I have 2000+ helicopter commercial instrument. It doesn’t matter who you learn from as long as you can pass your checkride with the DPE. You learn after you get your ratings.

So if you want ASEL I would find the person you can get the 40 hours as quick as possible while knocking out the requirements.

What does fixed-wind flight training cost from start to finish, on average?

I looked into rotary training a few years back and it was close to $100k.

Just for private pilot's license to go screw around in cessnas and take trips with the fam? About $7-10K.

If you're looking at becoming a professional pilot its a lot more.

172SP is about $130 wet. You need 40 hours to test. So $5200 just for that and then and additional $40 an hour minimum for the CFI however many hours you need with them.

That must be why the rotary training I was looking at was so expensive.

Is it possible to transition from private to professional? Like get your private license and then rack up hours over time?

Yes, but it’s much more cost effective to just let the USAF or USARMY pay for it at that point.

Yup. Can get expensive of course just renting planes and flying around all the time. Of course you could go in with me and buy a small plane and fly it all you want
