Looking to get my private pilots license on fixed wing in the BR area. I have found Gulf Coast Aviation, aviation specialists, and Fly by Knight so far but figured I would turn to the all knowing OT for more in depth knowledge. Does anybody know of the best instructor in BR/Gonzales/Hammond area? I searched but couldn’t find anything and TIA

I learned years ago from a fellow named Ed Duffard, but he's been dead for years. I have some names in a notebook at work that I will post tomorrow. However, in the meantime, go to Gleim Aviation and start doing some book work.

I've heard good things about Fly By Knight, though.

My brother did fly by knight in high school and then became a F-15 Strike Eagle pilot for the Air Force.
I did band and became a virgin.

Air Reldan was good back in the day. They've been on the Northshore (Hammond and Slidell) since Katrina. Be aware, the planes were severe beaters.

Fly by Knight is great. The best rates of any school around and Sharon Knight is a great instructor.

I was a pilot on my first construction job at 10 years old. The boss said to take that pile of wood and pile it over there.

I have heard nothing but great things about FlyByKnight. Not sure about Gulf Coast Aviation. I'm waiting on my medical to get started over at Owen's in New Iberia.

For now, I'm using ASA Prepware Private Pilot App to get ready for the written exam. And yes as nerdy as it sounds I am using XPlane11 to practice instrument stuff. It's not real but some pilots say it's better than nothing in the mean time.

GCA is a good school, but last I remember only had a small operation in BR (they’re KNEW based).

FBK I haven’t had any dealings with, but have heard good things.

Go get the written test out the way first. Don't pay $50 an hour for instructing on written. Hammond usually has a 6 part class. But they have online schools. Get your written passed and then do flight training. Then you just have to pay for your 30-40 hours dual instruction plus plane rental.

I went through flight school of NOLA, but could have saved $4,000 getting the written online.

I have the King ground school courses and have been studying those to pass the written. I already have about 46 hours and my short cross country under my belt but had to take a break for financial reasons and in the interim the guy I was learning under quit instructing so need somebody new to finish up

Seems we have a lot of pilots on here.

A side benefit is it is by far the best way to get to an away college football game. At most of these university airports the shuttle drops you off at the stadium entrance and you can wave at all the vehicle traffic below on final.

The key is getting a good instructor that u mesh well with.. u can be at a great school, and have their crappiest instructor and it will set u back.. so dont just use the first instructor that u meet.. do some homework and talk to lots of pilots on the field.. there are some instructors that just dont do well with certain people..
ex: if u are older, you will prob do ok with an a-hole.. if you are young you will prob do better with an up and comer who has similar goals.. the first instructor can have a huge impression on a new pilot... choose carefully

McDonald Flying Service at BTR. He has a deal where you can join the club and just pay for fuel. I've flown with a lot of instructors and he's one of the best

I don’t know if ol Sam Watley is still doing check rides out of Gonzales, but if he is and when the time comes........ good luck. He’s fair but he’s a hard arse.
