Also the dwi crew at BRPD has retired.

I thought this too.

The quoted article in the OP references the task force though. They're still around? I never ever see them posted up like they used to be.

They fought it because to get a DUI erased from your record cost close to $10K. In NR, DUI’s and MIP’s were never about safety and all about money.

I know you're joking, but 18-21 year olds aren't millenials.

We would have all used the hell out of Uber and Lyft in college. I'm glad to see this.

That PTI money is a hell of a drug.

I also wonder how BR is going to make up the DUI revenue decline? Tax increases on Uber and Lyft probably.

Nah, too much of a political fight. Most politically tenable way to increase revenue is to increase fines/fees for bonds and convictions for all offenses. Anyone who opposes is pilloried for being "soft on crime".

Actually, DA’s and AG’s across the nation have been struggling with declining DUI-related fines and their accompanying revenues. Their solution was simple...

They’re going to try and lower the DUI threshold to .05 from .08. Utah put it in place in 2018. Many other states are moving towards it.

It has nothing to do with public safety. The facts are that arrests and vehicular deaths are down nationwide. It’s all to prop up the legal and law enforcement community that are losing business in the private and public sector in lost customers and people caught in the system.

Now that you mention it, I don’t hear about the check points like I used to. Or the stories about BRPD hanging out in Southdowns waiting for people to leave the Bulldog.

At that time, they were getting earmarked federal grant money to pay for their checkpoint bullshite. I suspect they no longer are having their revenue generation subsidized by the feds and it doesn't bring in enough money to warrant keeping that task force's activities at the level they were when that sweet free fed money was coming in.

The DUI task force definitely still exists, though. I think they're in the special operations command of the BRPD.

Right. It was never about public safety. Law enforcement since the 70s or so has become all about revenue for the state.

I haven't seen a checkpoint in years. I'm also rarely out past 10 these days unless I'm working late.

of I remember correctly, there was a thread on here that explained it all. There was a group of 3 guys. They headed the task force. And they billed extreme overtime doing this. Something that equates to like 80 hour weeks year round. Well they did they for a few years so their pension would pay out that much. No they are retired getting paid based on those numbers. There was a new report on this, not sure if it was Nak or not.

That age group is very anti-drunk driving and lots of peer pressure not to do it, which is great.

Another large factor is that a DUI 10+ years ago, particularly a 1st offense DUI didn't cost all that much when combined with the cost of staying in school at LSU.
Now with the price of LSU up well over 10+ years ago, families can't risk the DUI factor anymore. I see friends/parents of college kids now being extremely proactive with their kids about drinking & driving. My parents maybe told me sometime about it once. I grew up in that age of when the drinking age jumped from 18 to 21. Everything was the Wild West back then. Places didn't know the real risks or care about the age change for those within the window.
Leap to today, these kids don't know a HS life of alcohol parties like us. They DO however know all about them pills & powders.

Could it also be dating apps and cost of drinking?

We I was in college you could get shitfaced for less than $10 (drink specials), now one beer is $5. This allowed us to go out every night searching for new poon.

Add apps like tinder, you now more only go out to meet someone specific. So there's less need to be at the bar "fishing".

There used to only be shitty cabs that would scam the crap out of drunk college kids. I was scammed into paying twice for a trip to riverside once.
Plus if you left your car overnight because you drank, predatory towing would take it. Coupled with back in the day, there was the no blow way out of a DWI, it made more sense to risk the drive home.
