Seems obvious but for some reason Louisiana fought ride sharing in spots

quote:

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the key demographic of young adults ages 18-21, often cited as reckless and cavalier when it comes to drinking and driving, have been making good choices in recent years on their wild nights out. DWIs for this age group have dropped dramatically from about 10 years ago, and officials say this likely has to do with the increase in ride-hailing options.

"It used to be that Tigerland was crazy," said Cpl. Jason Martin, a member of the Police Department's DWI Task Force. "Nobody got designated drivers. They didn't care. Nowadays, there's Ubers lined up double-stacked down Bob Pettit, in both directions."

quote:

In 2005, 12% of all DWI arrests in the parish were of young adults under the age of 21, according to numbers provided by the police department. Between Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 31, 2019, that number plummeted to 3% of all DWI arrests.

There's more to it than ride sharing.

20s are less likely to drive, and they drink far less alcohol drug than previous generations.

maybe in the macro (overly-represented in coastal, super-urban areas)

this is a very micro situation that doesn't fall within your general data trend

yes because of rideshares. 15 years ago you would call a cab and 2 hours later it might show up.

Also the dwi crew at BRPD has retired.

Is there anything Millennials can't frick up?

Destroying the time honored tradition of rednecks driving drunk.

this, it's good that the numbers are down, would like to see how those older figures were driven by brake tag inspection points outside of Tigerland, DUI roadblocks, basically targeting an area where students congregate as opposed to the general Baton Rouge area, having said that, don't know how in the hell I avoided getting one while at LSU but I'm grateful as heck for that

Don’t forget the cabbies screaming about how the money was going to be sent to California.

I had a guy that gave me his number but he refused to go to tiger land. The only time we could call him was if were at ivars or downtown. Even then it was 50/50 if the cab would show up.

Now that you mention it, I don’t hear about the check points like I used to. Or the stories about BRPD hanging out in Southdowns waiting for people to leave the Bulldog.

I can’t remember if it was during undergrad or law school, but I tried to get a cab once from the Chimes. Had to call a number, waited an hour, called again, waited an hour, and gave up. The taxi industry deserved its death.

We went to a wedding years ago and one of the wives (no pics) called a cab company to schedule a cab for when the reception ended. Cab company said the cab will be there at that time. We went to the reception and enjoyed ourselves expecting a ride home. Reception ended and no cab showed up. Cab company then says they don't schedule pickups, but said they'll send someone. Two hours later we gave up and just drove ourselves home.

Uber and Lyft have been two really convenient ways to avoid DUIs. Anyone who gets a DUI in these times is just a damn idiot.

Cab companies are generally run by drug lords or other scummy people. Uber/Lyft was probably the best invention of the previous decade.
