re: President Trump orders the reopening of Alcatraz Island Prison

Alcatraz is a crumbling mess due to the proximity to salt water and the amount of fog that island gets yearly.
It would cost far more to rehab the place than it would to just build a whole new state of the art prison.
It's a novel idea, but not at all practical.

I’ve been there and they “don’t have to level it”.
Keep it primitive, just renovate the Guards living quarters etc…
But leave the rest just as is & tighten Any security concerns for breech.
Other than that, the place is like a bunker out there.
It’s been 20 years since I went, but they can just update the technology/coms and quarters for the workers & let the scum sweat to death inside

quote:This is all very nice but he specified "a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ." The island is 22 acres with a bit over half of that (13 acres) suitable for building. So, what we're talking about is building a substantially larger prison than currently exists and support facilities in a Walmart parking lot.

Only way I can see that possibly working is building up which would absolutely require the demolition of the current structure.

I'm as MAGA as they come and while it's a great idea in theory, I believe the reason it was closed to begin with was the astronomical operating costs. So it doesn't seem to be economically viable. I would be all for putting the worst criminals there and letting them fend for themselves but the ACLU and other like minded organizations would sue nonstop.

Here's an idea: Rather than throw pallets of cash at San Francisco, how about building it in one of the areas that took an economic hit after manufacturing jobs shipped overseas? That could be a reel boon to one of these places as opposed to San Francisco, where much of that money will eventually find its way into dem politicians pockets and programs that this board hates.

And isn't ADX Florence supposed to be hell on earth? Why do we need a new one?
In a perfect world we would need the extra space for politicians and judges.

If this is for illegals, we should just build a tent city in extreme remote area in New Mexico or Arizona. The federal government already owns the vast majority of that area. Then ship every single illegal there. Build a courthouse for the immigration judges, but tell the illegals they can go home whenever they want. Or wait for years to see a judge.

per treaty if Alcatraz stops serving as a prison it reverts to the Indians

This will never happen.
Trump is an idiot.

If he wants a prison island, why not buy back Singing River Island off Pascagoula MS? It was a naval station until 2006 and has a lot of usable building and they could build some large prison barracks no problem. Alcatraz is old and would need a total makeover. Cheaper to send them down south to friend territory and let them rot in the heat of the Gulf of America

Totally agree on the salt water. It's corrosive as hell. Fog? Give me a break.

I believe the treaty referenced by protestors in the 60s was the Treaty of Fort Laramie, which seems specious at best.
The Treaty of Fort Laramie didn’t involve the lands of California or any tribes that inhabited that area so I don’t think the terms of that treaty would be considered applicable.

Really Clyde??? Why do you think the Golden Gate Bridge is in constant cycles of scraping, sandblasting, priming and painting. None of those metal parts are anywhere near the saltwater of S.F. Bay.
