Edited…I had typed a wall of text but thought better about some of the info I included.
Basically I screwed up at work and may get fired tomorrow. Was just needing to vent but please keep my in your prayers. Don’t really want to lose 28 years with my company and have to start over at 53
This happened to me a couple of years ago. I got laid off after 20yrs, found a new great job, then fricked up and got fired. It was a dark time for a couple months. But I ended up getting another chance, got a new job with another company, and life is good. This all happened at 50. You will get through it. It may be hard, but I promise it will be temporary.

Summarize what you did, but give us the juicy details though

You have to start over every day you wake up. You just didn't realize it.

Going to quote what the other poster said and add some context and advice from the business side.
This is 100% correct and here's why. Get the testing done first, if you have some kind of degenerative cognitive disorder that gets discovered while you are employed, you have considerable protections under Federal law that prevents them from outright terminating you.
Has even more implications if you have unvested assets like stock or pensions.
Prayers for you and I hope all the testing comes back negative. Everyone loses focus from time to time as well, and I find as I age its harder to keep focus. I'd rather be pursuing my hobbies or spending time with my family, but owning businesses doesn't afford opportunities to lose focus. Hoping to retire in 5 years and sell my business assets.

Did you start taking any new medications in the last couple of years? When my husband started taking a statin, his memory and cognitive function started to slip. When he stopped, both returned to normal. That happened with all three of the statins he tried.

A buddy told me he suffered memory loss bc of a statin he was on too.

Coming from the guy who is retired USAF this checks out. Lowest ranked guy on the flight line is definitely taking the fall for the socket that fell into the jet engine.

No, you do not.

I didn’t see the original text, but after 28 years at a company how big of a mess did you make to worry about getting fired?
Dayum.
Dayum.

Update to this thread is we find out the OP worked at Cane's or Bush's Baked Beans.

I worked with a guy that couldn’t remember shite short-term. I swore he had dementia or Alzheimer’s. He was in his 60’s and I saw my grandfather’s go through that nasty disease. I was certain he was going downhill. He was essentially ushered into retirement 6 years ago and still gets around town, maintains a normal life. Apparently he was on some meds that really messed with him.

Prayers sent brother.

I hope you don't get fired.
You're probably worrying needlessly.

You still gainfully employed Baw?

I went by this.........I get a hundred percent more done than other directors at the cost of being 95% correct. As long as my mistake didn't affect patient care, I'm doing a great job!
I wrote the Haz Com Manual and the Medical Necessity guidelines for HCA (305 hospitals at the time) straight from federal regulations.

Been there myself. Messed up big time about 10 years back. Stupid mistake. Owned it, but couldn’t escape the consequences. Looking back, the mistake still bothers me. Truth be told, I was looking to leave, but on my terms. Fortunately I fell into the best job I’ve ever had and am happier than ever. It will work out.
Almost exactly my story. Not only was it the best job for me at the time, I have grown into two upward positions with my current company. Sometimes life forces your hand, and you stay as level as you can and you will prosper.

I can tell you from a 40-year career, if you don’t make mistakes from time to time, you aren’t doing anything. What counts is whether you have been a decent employee or not. Administrators will tolerate some huge frick ups if you have been generally agreeable and don’t do anything malicious.
When you frick up royally is when you need for others to go to bat for you….if you have generally been a pain in the arse, they won’t do it.
