Well, good to see you didn't get fired, so give of the dirt on what happened...
Little context would be nice, just to see how bad you screwed up and how lucky you are not getting fired....

Glad you're still employed.
Now WTF did you do?

Glad to hear everything turned out as it should have. Sounds like you are in a good spot and contribute well.

Glad you've had a good conclusion to this saga.

My brother in law was just fired because of a sarcastic comment followed by a group email (which the boss was tagged in) directed at the incompetent leadership. He’s also 53 and has been with the same company for 28ish years.

Great news.
We don’t get much so I genuinely feel happy when we do hear good stuff.

I've been working in management labor/employment law for over forty years.
You handled it perfectly. I have seen a number of similar scenarios blow up on the employee because the employee did not handle it well.

Sat with my GM first thing this morning. Didn’t make any excuses and explained how I fully appreciated how my mistakes affect our location, our profitability, and the position I also put him in with regards to having to answer to our GVP. He told me the fact that I was there first thing owning it and not making excuses and that I obviously understood the weight of the error, coupled with my overall track record justifies that I am where I need to be. We discussed the issue, what happened to cause it, what we need to do moving forward to make sure it didn’t happen again and that was it. Back to work. LOL…he did say he took a pretty good arse chewing from the GVP but over the years I had contributed to plenty enough “atta boys” to offset one bad arse chewing.
That's good news. It's nice when you feel like you have the backing of our employer (rather than just simply hearing it).
Congrats.

In 1998, I walked in the office of my boss and told him, "I resign".
I basically made a very, very simple error that probably 99 out of 100 folks would make. Under normal conditions, this wouldn't have even been worth discussing but in this particular case, if a few small random things hadn't happened, we'd have ended up on CNN. It was that kind of thing.
Because of the job that I had, people were counting on my absolute competency. Even though nothing bad happened, I felt like I had failed them and due to the fact of the mistake I made, next time we wouldn't be so lucky. Because of that, I walked in and resigned. I was offshore at the time and told my leader to call me a helicopter, I was done.
He looked at me and said "no, I'm not letting you quit". I outlined what had happened and the mistake I made and my concerns going forward with something like that happening again. He said, "I bet going forward you are going to do everything in your power to ensure something like that doesn't happen, right?"
I said "yeah, that's true". He just said "get back to work, I need you here."
That was 28 years ago. I'm still at the same company. I appreciate the leader he was.
