Powerful stuff. Richard Burton describes alcoholism.

Youtube link.

Video is short but Burton says more in a couple of minutes than most actors can say in a couple of hours.

That was pretty remarkable actually. Good find.

Powerful. The boxer analogy is spot on. One never knows what, when or where the knockout punch is until it is too late, most times.

I really enjoyed his movie Nightmare Before Christmas, it all sort of makes sense now

Having been through it myself, what I remind myself is that if I pick up a single drink, it'll be like getting in a cage with a horny and/or pissed off gorilla. The gorilla decides the outcome. We're not done, until the gorilla says we're done. The only say I have in the matter is if I choose to get in the cage or not.
I remind myself of that daily because for me, it's 100% true.

That made me look into the mirror a bit. Nice find and as previous post says, boxing analogy is spot on.

Thank you for this.
Really.
Really.

Not to steal the alcohol thunder, but Phil Anselmo gave an awesome speech in front of college kids about his heroin addiction. It's worth watching this 6 minute clip of the speech:
Youtube
Basically he's telling these kids to "walk on home, boy."
At one point in the full video (which is an hour) the kids kinda chuckle at one of his stories of getting high. He stops and barks "We can laugh together, but this ain't funny brother."
Basically he started heroin because he liked to stage dive and injured his back.
Full Hour Talk
And yes, I would PIITB of the chick on stage with him.

I’m still trying to get to that point.
I didn’t drink for 3 days which is probably longer than I’ve gone in 10 years.
After shakes, sweats, and shits I gave in.

Excellent
"It's always November, rainy and 3:00 am, got the shakes, ashamed of what we've become.. "
There's nothing like those late night moments when you feel sick, ashamed and want it all to end, yet the only thing getting that takes those feelings and that pain away is amother drink. Nighttime was always when the demons came out. ..and the mirror was my worst enemy
We all believe that dependency is another day or week away and somehow we will beat it before it's too late, but that's always wrong.

I’ve found I can have two drinks and stop. After three though I just keep going until the room starts spinning.

Real good friend of mine who battles it says how beer and booze seems to be everywhere things people like to do in south louisiana. Name it, festivals, parades, Crawfish boil, tailgating and now inside tiger stadium. I have another friend who went totally sober as a judge and it's astounding. It seems harder to do here than many places. God be with anyone going through such things because it is serious.

As a social drinker it’s very difficult for me to understand people who battle with alcohol abuse.
Well I have a person in my life now that’s struggling with this and I’ve just now admitted to myself they have a disease.
I’ve read and watched several things about alcoholics but at end of the day an adult can buy and drink anytime they want.
You can’t monitor them 24-7.
They have to take steps to overcome it.

Southeast Louisiana is about the worst place to be a recovering addict of alcohol. Alcohol is so pervasive that people frown if someone doesn’t drink.
Alcohol is suppose to be an occasional thing. In SE louisiana, occasions are all the time.

As an alcoholic with 107 days sober, this video saved me from relapsing yesterday. He reminded me of the pain I felt before and immediately after I gave up, which I had forgotten! I hope all addicts that want recovery find it. It is an evil disease and it made me a nasty and depressed sorry human.

You know, I’m not dependent, and I certainly know that I’m not immune to alcoholism, especially since it’s well rooted in my family, I do notice that it’s been used by said family to be a treat of sorts for all kinds of things like having a bad day, cooking dinner, or feeling lonely, or for every celebration or get together under the sun that comes up. I try to keep my consumption of it to once a week or once every couple of weeks, and in real moderation like one or two and that’s it. That being said, I can certainly see how difficult it must be to live in South Louisiana with that disease. There’s always a drink to be had in every situation it seems. I do a lot of entertaining in business, and except for lunches perhaps, alcohol is always the center of attraction, so much so that it takes a lot of discipline and planning to moderate and/or abstain even in order to remain sociable but also remain in control.
GREAT find BTW.... Thanks for sharing.
