Alcohol is so pervasive that people frown if someone doesn’t drink.

I was invited to a gathering of 10-12 friends from HS. I'm a nondrinker and was the only one there. They still get together every few months. I wasn't invited back. Was that the reason? I can't say for sure, but I wonder.

Are you a non-drinker by choice or because you had an alcohol problem? If it is the former, do you make a production out of that fact?

I rarely drink but don't make a production of it so it has never been an issue.

Choice. I'm not opposed to it and I would enjoy having a drink once in a while but even 1-2 gives me a hangover. Not worth it. I don't make a big deal out of it

Having been through it myself, what I remind myself is that if I pick up a single drink, it'll be like getting in a cage with a horny and/or pissed off gorilla. The gorilla decides the outcome. We're not done, until the gorilla says we're done. The only say I have in the matter is if I choose to get in the cage or not.

I remind myself of that daily because for me, it's 100% true.

Jesus fricking Christ.
I'm never making fun of alcoholics again.

I am on the other side of alcoholism in that my now ex wife is an alcoholic and is in the early stages of recovery. She was recently in her second stay at a detox facility where she was probably a month or so away from irreversible damage to her organs, leading her to death. She is now in a communal sober living facility trying to get her life together from a sobriety standpoint. It totally and completely consumed her life to the point where I had to divorce her.

bloodwork showed elevated numbers for my liver

This is where I was in December/January. I kept telling myself and the doctor that I was having 2 or so drinks day and 14 to 18 a week. After the 3rd bad set of blood work I sat down and counted out the real number...I was at 25 to 30 drinks/week.

Now I have 4 days a week of absolutely no drinking, and no more than 3 drinks/day on the days I do drink. Very little beer now, and next to zero hard liquor. Mainly wine in the evening with dinner. And absolutely zero lunch/daytime drinking.

How high were your numbers if you don’t mind me asking. My ALT and AST were in the low to mid 100s. Can’t remember exact numbers but 120-150 or so on both. I bet I was having 50+ drinks a week. 8 shots of vodka every night, at least.

It’s much easier than you think. If you drink every day you build up your tolerance. I didn’t even begin to feel a good buzz until the 3rd or 4th shot and I took them in quite quick succession. Then over the course of the rest of the evening I took another 3-4 drinks but not as close together. I would start drinking at 4 and be done by 8. My drinking habits are not very usual, though, I would guess.

Why? I mean, I’m not trying to be a smart arse- but why not just quit? If you’re lying to your doctor and stuff, why not just stop all together.. Does it taste that good to you? Is it the escape you need?

I love ice cream, but i think that if i was having serious health issues because of it, and my doctor was having serious talks, i could quit eating it.. then again, while i have tons of alcoholics in my family, i dont know what it’s like to be one myself, so i dont mean to mock it.

After a night of drinking heavy, my body and mind naturally gives up drinking for days or weeks because I dont want anything to do with it.
Same here.

I don’t drink nearly as much as I used to. I was kind of a “social drunk.” If I went to a party or the duck camp, I’d usually get polluted and be terribly hung over the next day. My body cannot handle drinking every day.

I don’t get polluted in public anymore. Occasionally with friends, but I pay for it the next day. I physically could not be an alcoholic.

Thanks. I’ve definitely been drinking too much and at my recent doctor visit they noticed some of the bloodwork showed elevated numbers for my liver. Nothing too serious but an obvious change from a year ago. I haven’t had a drink in a week and won’t for a while. I’m lucky as I had no issues quitting and had no withdrawals. I don’t want to get to that point.

I checked into a hospital with pancreatitis once. A sonogram of my liver, they said it looked in bad shape. They told my id be dead soon if I didn't quit now

I checked out and got drunk. Stayed drunk for another 3 years. I did a pretty good job of keeping it a secret until near the end when I was drinking 247

Ah, that's where I am right now, just move back the schedule about four hours. It's easy to get in a routine where you just want to take the edge off a few nights a week. Next thing you know, it's five nights a week. I'm in a weird spot because it's never affected my work, although it probably has stunted my relationships.

Why? Because I like it, especially wine with dinner. Nothing wrong with 7 to 9 a week, it just has to stop there.

Mine are rookie numbers compared to yours. And 8 shots of vodka? I wouldn’t be able to walk straight.

One thing to remember is that a 1.5 oz shot of vodka (which is the size of the shot glass I use) is the same amount of alcohol as a 5oz pour of wine or a can of beer. People think because it is hard liquor that it is so much worse. I know plenty of people who come home and drink 6-8 beers between getting home and going to bed. It’s no different other than I probably finish what I drink in a shorter amount of time than someone drinking beer or wine. Maybe someone with more knowledge can correct me but there is no difference. Alcohol is alcohol and you have to take serving size into account based on what the drink is. I’m not chugging 8 glasses of vodka. Lol
