I have seen this interview before. A great find.
I've been sober since May 14, 1986, the day I realized one drink was too many and one hundred was not enough.
Thanks for posting it!

I recently went 30 days without drinking. God that was miserable. I’ll never make that mistake again.

I was invited to a gathering of 10-12 friends from HS. I'm a nondrinker and was the only one there. They still get together every few months. I wasn't invited back. Was that the reason? I can't say for sure, but I wonder.

Southeast Louisiana is about the worst place to be a recovering addict of alcohol. Alcohol is so pervasive that people frown if someone doesn’t drink.
Alcohol is suppose to be an occasional thing. In SE louisiana, occasions are all the time.
It's not much different in other places. Wisconsin comes to mind.
I go places where people drink often, but it doesn't trigger me. Extreme lows or highs trigger me.

might have been because they realized how much of a nerd you were in hs and thought they'd see if you'd changed?

Probably so. I was pretty much a nerd

Biggest problem for alcoholics is forgetting the pain. That's why AA has chips at certain points of recovery. It's really easy to get to a point where the pain is faint and you feel like you could give social drinking a try again.
One reason people in recovery/recovered go to meetings is to hear that pain again from people going through it.

jk, of course, we had a pretty good hs group and a lot of us still get together, we don't give it a second thought about who drinks or doesn't when it comes to sending out invites/notifications, but I know that the non-drinkers do

There's nothing like those late night moments when you feel sick, ashamed and want it all to end, yet the only thing getting that takes those feelings and that pain away is amother drink. Nighttime was always when the demons came out. ..and the mirror was my worst enemy We all believe that dependency is another day or week away and somehow we will beat it before it's too late, but that's always wrong.
Spot on for me as well Roger

I used to think that too, but having lived in a few different states, as well as traveling a lot for work, the fact is that alcohol is a big, big deal everywhere.. i’ve yet to spend time in a place where it isn’t the center of social functions.. then again, i’ve never been to Utah, lol

Stick to beer and your in the clear. Liquor will take your life from you.

Yeah but how many States can you fill up with gas and grab a handle of Jim Beam...

Remembering the pain is what keeps me sober. The memory of the pain doesn’t consume me but the second I forget, I’m vulnerable. Just my opinion.

Not so fast, my friend. Beer will get you there. Just takes more of them. I had no taste for liquor but pounding 8-10 buds or millers a day will do wonders for your guts, skin, liver and brain.
I've quit drinking 3 times. Working on a 4th. It's not easy. Never is. Never will be.

That boxer analogy is powerful.

I didn’t drink for 3 days which is probably longer than I’ve gone in 10 years.
After shakes, sweats, and shits I gave in.
If you really want to quit there are many guys on here that will help. I am one of them. I finally won a few rounds with the boxer. That was the hardest thing I ever did.
He still keeps getting on the ring, but it is easier now.

I feel awful for people who get addicted to alcohol. I used to be a hardass that said "the are weak", but as I get older I realize I was wrong
After a night of drinking heavy, my body and mind naturally gives up drinking for days or weeks because I dont want anything to do with it.
It takes a "disease" or whatever you call it for your mind to want to drink more in those situations

Thanks. I’ve definitely been drinking too much and at my recent doctor visit they noticed some of the bloodwork showed elevated numbers for my liver. Nothing too serious but an obvious change from a year ago. I haven’t had a drink in a week and won’t for a while. I’m lucky as I had no issues quitting and had no withdrawals. I don’t want to get to that point.
One thing that has been aggravating though is the reaction from people. I’ve had people say they were “worried” about me because I wasn’t drinking at dinner or what not. Seriously? Do they also worry about people they see exercising? The way we treat alcohol in this country just makes everything so much worse and makes it very hard for people to quit.
I’m curious for those of you who are/were serious drinkers. Did you ever go to the doctor and have bloodwork? Did you see high liver values? I wonder if the heavy drinkers I know just ignore the doctor or if they just never go to the doctor.
