SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/Gray News) - A man has found himself in trouble with the law once again after winning Kentucky’s $167 million Powerball last year.
Kentucky police said James Farthing, 51, was arrested Monday for domestic violence after allegedly assaulting a woman the day prior.
According to police, the female victim reported a verbal argument turned physical when Farthing began strangling her, with marks visible on the woman’s neck.
Farthing’s charges included strangulation and assault, both for domestic violence.
The 51-year-old appeared on Tuesday in the Scott County District Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Farthing’s bond was set at $15,000, with the judge saying the decision was based on his charges and risk level.
The Kentucky man has been required to wear a monitoring device to alert the victim if he comes near her, and he cannot have any contact with the woman, officials noted.
Farthing’s Monday arrest marked the fourth time he has been arrested since winning the multimillion jackpot.
In April 2025, Farthing was arrested in Florida on misdemeanor charges of battery and resisting an officer. He pled guilty to those charges.
Then, in February of this year, Farthing was arrested on an intimidation charge in Scott County, followed by an arrest on charges that included burglary in March.
Farthing’s next hearing for his latest arrest is scheduled for Aug. 27.

The victim of the DV incident reported that after returning to his house from a boating trip, a verbal argument escalated. Farthing wrapped his hands around her neck, restricted her breathing, and lifted her against a bedroom wall.

NY Post reported that this wasn't Farthing's first rodeo: "James Shannon Farthing has spent 30 of his 50 years alive behind bars at 25 different correctional institutions..."
This is a good advert against the progressive equity bullshite that they just need money and they won't commit crimes.

Its honestly mind-blowing how stupid a lot of jackpot winners are. I guess it just proves the average person is a lot worse than you may think.

On November 23, 2025, Farthing was driving his vehicle on Man-O-War Boulevard in Lexington, Kentucky. Black box data revealed he was traveling between 103 and 117 mph just eight seconds before the crash. He violently rear-ended a moving car at an intersection. Rather than checking on the other driver, Farthing abandoned his car and fled the scene. He was indicted on another felony and misdemeanor. The crash victim could sue for a lot.
