Planned obsolescence is a real thing. And yes, companies do conspire to plan the obsolescence of their products. The light bulb was one of the first products manufactured to not last too long.

Just spoke to a customer who was concerned with alerts she was receiving from her macbook. Apparently Apple has a counter on the number of cycles their batteries go through. Her Macbook started warning her that her battery has reached the limit of their recommended number of cycles. They wanted $300 to replace the battery.

She asked if she should get a new computer. Her current mac does not die quickly, charges fully, and is running great yet she was going to replace it because of some arbitrary number Apple came up with to create anxiety

That's one of those kid suffocating fridges tho. When we finally got rid of my grandparents similar fridge we took the door off before we put it out for pickup.

Freaking dishwashers. Does no one build a dishwasher that lasts longer than five years any longer?

Bosch vs Miele

Funny that you mentioned Bosch. That’s what we have right now. It’s only a few years old, don’t think we’ve had to five years. But it’s somewhere in that range. We bought it because it is supposed to be top of the line, super quiet, all the bells and whistles, yadda yadda yadda.

It’s quit working. Home Depot is delivering our new dishwasher this week. I told my wife not to waste money on an expensive one. I don’t mind paying more for something as long as I get value from the extra money spent. I just can’t see spending the extra money when the expensive ones don’t last any longer than the cheaper ones.

I'd save that fridge. Awesome design.

its a freezer. and the inside is equally cool. i don't have a pic but it has 4 blue aluminum doors on springs (yep the springs are still 100%) without a single paint chip and a 'dial' to change the cold level..which is ingenious as you turn the dial and it slides a hidden slat to cover/uncover vent holes in the back.

very cool design i agree.

eta here's a pic (not mine)

Our oven in my house is from 1975. Still works like a champ although it is fairly ugly. I've always been hesitant to replace it because it's probably still better than anything I can buy now.

DO NOT REPLACE IT!

My wife HATED our 1980's dishwasher because 'it looked old'. Forget the fact that the MFer was like a damn sandblaster/autoclave combo. She just had to replace it with something stainless to matchup with our other modern appliances. Well, that stainless POS doesn't clean anything. Now we have to wash the dishes before we put them in the dishwasher.

The cast iron boiler from my 105 year old house. I believe this same model once powered the Titanic.
Sucks for all the people who have to replace their furnace every 15 years. This thing will outlive me.

Would make a good horror story.

Turns out there’s been a body boiling in there the entire time. Haunted water.

Make sense. My radiators are powered by ghost heat from hell.

My wife convinced me to get rid of my Amana washer and dryer from the mid 90s for some fancy front loaders when we bought this house. Big mistake. I've already tossed them and went back to an old school style washer and dryer although they still suck compared to the ones I got rid of.

we redid our bathroom last year and my wife tried a whole bunch of "creative" ways to have soap and shampoo in there.

after a year of ridiculous efforts i got in there to take a shower and there were 2 loofahs hanging one day. they just really haven't improved on a way to deliver minimum soap to maximum body.

Are we writing a heavy metal song?

the boiler in the basement down where only darkness dwells,
Radiators powered by the ghost heat straight from hell,
The body in the boiler, is nothing now but bone,
So have a cup of haunted tea, with a blood berry scone

People replace their furnaces every 15 years? My furnace is 21 years old, my parents' is 25 and my sisters is 27 years old. Are we talking about water heaters or furnaces? I have replaced many water heaters over the years living in 4 different houses.
