This is an easy one for me in an even shorter timeframe.
50 years ago we went to the moon and here we are today and not even sure we will make it back in the next decade.

I wanted to cry when our 50 year old washing machine was finally broken beyond repair. The drum eventually gave up the ghost but that was my favorite appliance I bought in college, used for $25 off of someone in college town. It had a good 20 years for us and 30 years for the PO. They told us it might last us a semester or two...

Replaced a furnace at 6 years as a very expensive part went bad and between that and the labor it was about the same as just putting in a new one.

Was fricking pissed.

The way common core teaches math is far superior to the old methods, and if you disagree then you are just plain wrong and you were likely not a good math student.

What if it was 32-13? Then the 2 would have to "borrow" a 1 from the 3. That's stupid. That's just a robotic algorithm which confuses kids and hides the fact that 32 is the same as 20 and 12. Common core spells out what's going on in multiple different ways, and the kids have a much better chance of "getting it".

And adding up instead of subtracting makes it far easier to do in your head, especially when you're dealing with a lot of digits. Trying to do subtraction the "old fashioned" way in your head is clunky and really, really hard. You have to do it right-to-left, keep track of all your digits and borrows, and then read out left-to-right to get your answer. Doing it the "new" way is much easier, it's just repeating the same process a few times, and you just have to keep the running total in your head. Not single digits in reverse order, and not silly "borrowed" ones and decremented digits.

The frick?

That convoluted mess is not how people do arithmetic in their heads.

32 - 13 =

32 - 3 = 29

29 - 10 = 19

That is how you do it in your head.

That is the dumbest thing Scruffy has ever seen.

No wonder our kids suck at math.

Yes it is. I wouldn't start with the jump to 15 and instead go straight to 20 though. Obviously this isn't really applicable for such a simple problem, but adding up is the way to go.

That's one way to do it. Now do 321 - 134 your way. I'll bet it's way easier to add 66 + 121 instead. Then do 3210 - 1345 your way. Much, MUCH easier to do 55->655->1655->1865 than whatever convoluted mess you would end up with trying to work backwards.

I think Scruffy doesn't know that he's bad at math.

Are we talking about water heaters or furnaces?

Speaking of hot water heaters(new not old) we upgraded recently from an electric hot water heater to a Triangle Tube indirect off the oil furnace, and it has been the best investment I’ve made in our house in a long time. Instant Scalding hot water if that’s what you want, and lasts FOREVER.

Can’t recommend them enough.

300 - 100 = 200

200 - 13 = 187

Honestly, it would actually just be

221 - 30 = 191

191 - 4 = 187
quote:

3210 - 1345

3210 - 1000 = 2210

345 - 210 = 135

2000 - 135 = 1865

If that is too hard, break up 135 into 100 and 35.

Your way is long and convoluted. It wastes time.

Just subtract.

Your entire method over complicated the entire process.

This idea of teaching the concept, rather than simply teaching them to do the act is so freaking lost on y’all.

That is the issue here.

Stop this nonsense of over complicating it and simply teach them how to do it.

Simple arithmetic should be nothing more than a memory game.

And you think my way is convoluted.

You probably can't even explain why you subtracted the wrong way in the first step, or where the 13 came from in the last step.

Do you realize yet that you're doing the same thing that common core is teaching, except your way makes less sense?

No, just add. Why do you insist on subtracting? Do you even realize that addition and subtraction are the same thing? Difference is it's easier to add.

That's what they're doing, teaching them how to do arithmetic. The old way taught an algorithm that arrives at the right answer, but it's arithmetically nonsensical.

Have you even looked at the actual math they're teaching kids these days, or have you only looked at the common core memes? Because if you truly do understand math, you would agree that the common core way is better than the old way.
